My son has a mild dust allergy.
As explained to me by his Doctor, dust allergy is actually an allergic reaction to those little things called DUST MITES, that feed on us (yuk!!!) during our sleep.
The Doctor said, among other things, that in regards to my
son’s bed toys (all those stuffed/plush toys) there are 2 things that needs to be done:
1) wash them in the laundry machine at least once a week in hot water. That will kill the dust mites.
2) Freeze the toys.
I chose the second option. It turns out that freezing these toys also kills the dust mites. The Doctor recommended doing it once a week, but I found it’s much better if I do it almost everyday.
In the morning, after my son gets out of bed, I put all those plush toys in a big bag (I use big bin bags, they are thick and last longer), tie it and put it in the freezer. We have a freezer box, which makes it easier, but even if you have a small freezer – you can still freeze few every day).
At the end of the day, before bedtime, I take it all out and arrange all the toys in his bed. Actually my son likes that and it became like an evening fun ritual for him – he lies on his bed, and I “dump” on him the toys straight from the big bag. He likes the “cold” feeling and hiding under all the toys.
It’s also great because I don’t need to wash the toys so often as I probably would if I didn’t discover this method.
Freezing also kills all sorts of germs and bacteria. So this is great not just for dust allergy kids, but for any other child!
