It is my belief that in todays day and world that what we listen to not only reflects our personality but can have a big impact on our lives, Music especialy. A lot of people will say music is music it means nothing. However tell me this when you listen
to music how does it make you feel? Does it make you feel more cheerful when your feeling down? Does it get you all revved up and ready before a big fight? Does it make you feel for a certain character in a movie? If you answer yes to any of these questions then you know music influences your everyday life!
Children rely alot on music to help them sleep, to help them learn and to make them feel safe. So lets ask ourselves what music is appropriate for their age? Obviously you're not going to play heavy metal to an infant all the swearing and yelling! But what about nursery rhymes (lullaby being the obvious answer)? I think nursery rhymes are great but i have to forever sift through them. Have you ever noticed how many nusery rhymes are about violence and death? Ring of rosies (about the plague otherwise known as black death), there was an old woman who swallowed a fly (in the end she died), Humpty dumpty (he fell off a wall), Jack and Jill (jack fell down and broke his crown) and hundreds alike. I hope it doesn't give the kids nightmares!!! Then we also have educational songs! I believe a child is never too youg to learn.
Your child may not be able to speak, walk or even crawl yet but playing counting and alphabet songs from a realy young age, I believe will speed up their developement when they do get a little older as it is drummed into them. For example 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 once I caught a fish alive, it is catchy and fun and it teaches how to count!!! Hi 5 and the wiggles are great for teaching the littlies.
Now that we have discussed infants and even toddler years what about the older kids. What are they listening to? Have you actualy stopped and listened to they're music? Eminem is full of swearing and violence and other disgusting acts. Pop is all about sex and flaunting what you've got and some rock is about drugs and alcohol. Whilst this might be ok for the teenagers and adults do you think that children should be listening to it? I don't! Problem is we forget to stop and monitor they're music choice and the more popular it is the more they learn from it! So kids start to think that its alright to flaunt it and swear amongst other things because the music they are listening to says so and it is then seen to be cool! Remember cildren are very impressionable and music is one of they're biggest learning tools!!!
Finaly I have to admit it the parents choice what they let they're kids listen to. I only hope that as a parent one takes into account the effect they're choice of music has on they're children.
