The Big Controversial Argument (Creation or other Religions Vs Evolution) What do we teach our kids?

peachynowamum by peachynowamum Talking Back(September 2006) (rank 26th)
My husband and i have two totally different veiws on how the earth was formed I believe in the creation theory which sugests the earth is only 6-7 thousand years old and he believes in the evolution theory which suggest the earth is billions of years old!!! We used to have
heated arguments about it forever then one day we decided we would respect each others beliefs and the arguments stopped but..... Now we have a child!!! What do we teach it? Which one is true? You can guess where this is heading right? MORE ARGUMENTS!!! not! We have decided that we will teach both theories to our child when they are old enough to understand and let them chose for themselves.  I do not believe that one should force they're belief on another! You can talk about them and share if someone asks but not force them. I also believe we need to respect each others beliefs more, then that way less arguments fights and wars will be started. What do you think?

Women are from Venus...
Nah, sreiously I have no pet theory on this one as I can see how many of them could conglomerate and almost all be true at the same time.  It  can become a point of division, or a point of education, like paulr says...people can agree to disagree, and learning how to compromise or accept that there may be more than one possible correct answer is an invaluable lesson for any person let alone a child.
Peace

Your children will likely learn a valuable lesson from you and your husband...
Hopefully they will see that people can agree to disagree, but that's a lesson they'll learn with or without you.

More importantly, I think that a husband and wife who don't agree on important things like "where did we come from, and how did we get here?" miss out on much of what a marriage can be. Although it may be a tough road, maybe you guys can seek together to discover answers you both agree on... the bottom line for your children is that they will benefit by seeing their parents in agreement on important issues.

answersingenesis.org is someplace you can start for "young earth", reasons.org is someplace you can start for "old earth"

Someone said, "Look at science through through the lens of scripture." As a believer, I feel it honors God to believe what's written in His word, which suggests a young earth. If it turns out I'm wrong, no biggie. I can live with that.

Combination of two

We talk about both theories and go to church .... I guess I introduce the possibility that God created the world and the circumstances where evloution led to where we exist today.  I also throw in sometimes that perhaps a day as mentioned in teh bible might not be a day as we experience it.  Ultimately my daughters are going to make up their own minds so as a parent I try to expose them to as much as I can.  I am hoping that this will also help them to accept that people won't always agree with you and that doesn't make them or you wrong ... rather it makes them interesting to know.

You Think You Have Problems
My 6YO son thinks Jean Luke Picard and the USS Enterprise are real as I have a 3d virual tour on one of my computers and you can go anywhere on the ship. I also have photos of me on the bridge of catain Kirks Enterprise when there was an exhibition at Scienceworks. They also superimposed me into a conversation with  crew members of the Picard Away Team so he has plenty of proof that I mingle with the Trek Set.
So I guess he is for the evolution team and will one day find out the truth about the Easter bunny, Santa and the crew of the USS Enterprise.

religion - what a controversial topic
Im a fence sitter, I was brought up attending sunday school, singing in choir, even being a sunday school teacher as a teenager. But because my dad (who brought me up) wasnt that religious - he used to go gliding on sundays and told me that he prayed while flying!! I never felt a strong connection with the church. I have in laws whose large families are very religious. I sent my children to christian schools but because we arent hugely religous it seems to not have that much impact on them. I work with people from many religions and respect them all. I have taught my children foremost to respect and be tolerant of all people. I personally believe in a "higher being" but I also believe that no religion is wrong in their worship of their  'higher beings'. I cant knock back dinosaur bones though and have also taught my children to be informed with scientific things, but to keep in mind that most humans have a need to believe in things that arent corporeal. We talk about all the christian celebrations and why we celebrate them. Its a hard subject unless you are totally immerced in whatever religion - because then children just do as their parents do and know no different.

children have minds of their own

My husband is atheist and I am confused.  I dont believe in god but I dont believe that there is nothing either.  I was quite prepared to not tell my child anything at all until he started asking questions which I would answer with all the honesty I could.  My mother on the other hand, decided to take him to sunday school after me telling her she couldn't.  It was world war 3 in our house that day!  I also specified at my sons school that he was not to attend scripture.  Later on, his teacher was away and the scripture teacher baby sat the class and taught them all a scripture lesson.  My son told me for yrs that I was wrong and there was a god, I just told him that some people believe in god and some people dont and if he wanted to believe then that was totally up to him.

We dont discourage him in his believe although he is starting to question things on his own now.  Like "why aren't dinosuars in the bible?"

Why aren't dinosuars in the bible?
Dragons, dragon and Behemoth all refer to dinosaurs. Note the specific description of Behemoth. Leviathan is probably an extinct sea creature such as a KRONOSAURUS or LIOPLEURODON.

References to Dragons

Deuteronomy 32:33 their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

Job 30:29 I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.

Psalms 44:19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

Psalms 74:13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.

Psalms 148:7 Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:

Isaiah 13:22 And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

Isaiah 34:13 And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls.

Isaiah 35:7 And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

Isaiah 43:20 The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.

Jeremiah 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

Jeremiah 10:22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

Jeremiah 14:6 And the wild did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

Jeremiah 49:33 And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.

Jeremiah 51:37 And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant.

Micah 1:8 Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and : I will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls.

Malachi 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Nehemiah 2:13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

Psalms 91:13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Isaiah 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

Jeremiah 51:34 Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out.

References to Behemoth

Job 40:15-24 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him. Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth. He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares. (or Will any take him in his sight, or, bore his nose with a gin?}

References to Leviathan

Job 41:1-10 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?

Psalms 74:14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

Psalms 104:26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

a different point of view
i think there is clearly more science to back up an old earth than one that was created in 6-7 days a few thousand years ago.  i think you can use the creation story to teach your kids about god's love for the world instead of interpreting it as a scientific record of early origins.  the creation story was handed down by oral tradition and has lots of value--i don't think it has to lose anything if you treat it as a story about purpose, intent and meaning.  just my two cents.  :)

i just don't think that creation and evolution can be compared on the same playing field, when one is pre-enlightenment/modern science and the other has a long history of research and study to back it up.  they are each valuable and essential in different ways.

Creation evolves
What's wrong with combining both? I believe that God created all things. I also believe He created to world to change and evolve. Some things like ape to man I disagree with, but the big bang theory is proof of God. In a instant everything suddenly exploded from the center where God was. When he spoke suddenly matter existed a flew out at unmeasureable speeds. From the point to where he started on Earth, time really didn't exist so billions of years is not unbelievable. Try this theory. See what you think.

I agree with creation.

I agree totally that the earth it self could be billions years old.  But creation did start  around 7000 years ago.

I suppose having a partner that does not agree does make it hard to teach your children your values.  They have free choice to take on board all infomation.  If you don't teach them they will find out another set of values at school.

My understanding of the THEORY of Evolution is that a tree suddenly appears.  The trunk then the leaves.  We don't see that now how could it appear like that.  We have seeds and they show a trunk and leaves from seedlings.  Gen 1:11,12

Jehovah God (YHWH)  created all things with the help of his son Jesus Christ  John 1:3, Prov 8:22,30,31.

Believe

Personally I am gonna allow my children to have there own beliefs. It is the same in our household.  I am catholic and my boyfriend doesn't believe in any religion.  I believe in adam and Eve and he believes in soemthing all together.  I just think when the times comes I will let my son know that there are many things that you can believe in and you just have to decided what it is you believe in.

Sounds good to me
i totally agree with you. You can't force something on a child, let them make up their own mind. If you loved each other enough, you should respect each other in what your belief's are and shouldn't fight. But anyways, the advice you have given it great.
