Trouble talking before they're 5?

Anonymous Author (October 2006)
I got told to make up a scrap book filled with articles from the catalogues we get in our letter box. I put in pictures like pools, tshirts, shoes, bags, food etc, and every day i go through with miss3 and get her to tell me what they are.
This really helps with the child talking more and be aware of what anything and everything is. Also, get a life like item for eg. if you come across a tshirt, then show them they're wearing a tshirt, or shoes, a carrot, potatoe etc. It just helps them to understand things from paper to reality.

It can be really useful to their vocabulary if you group similar items together
It can be really useful help a child organise their vocabulary if you group similar items together. Such as have a page of vegetables, a separate page for clothes, toys, things that fly etc.

Great Idea!
You could also put them in alphabetical order  so they could also learn the way letters come after one  another. I do it that way. That way they are grouped and you can work on those letters they are having trouble with.  So we have lots on our s, f, and g pages at the moment.

Encouraging Speech..
My step daughter was not really speaking until she went to school.. She was a pointer or she would whisper in your ear to tell you something if you could understand it that was great.. At that stage she never whispered in my ears though I was still to knew.. We saw a huge difference when she went to school...  I am told that (not going to mention anyone in particular) would just let her point until she nodded her head when she finally stumbled on what she wanted.. We only got to see her every second weekend, and we knew she knew what every thing was but just would not say it...  So we would tell her what the item was and ask her to repeat it.. Let me rephrase that.. Her daddy would do that because at the time I myself did not speak French so I was not helping much because for me she had to point... So to help out I usually got daddy to come and figure out what she wanted...

Encouraging speech
Great idea. My kids are great talkers like their Dad! But my nephew is 5 and can't speak very well. He talks in a similar way to a 18mth old. He has just started speech therapy but I think he needs more interaction. Thanks.

Encouraging speech

My daughter is going thru speech therapy too and she's only 3, but she's behind in talking and the speech therapist at the kindy said for me to make up a scrap book, like i mentioned in my original comment at the beginning, and it's done her wonders. Hope everything goes well with your nephew.
