Which of the brain does your child use more often?

tinker79 by tinker79 Talking Back(October 2006) (rank 56th)

Did you know that the left half or left brain deals with things that are concrete (real) and rational(able to reason).

Left Brain characteristics are:

  • Detailed  - able to see fine points
  • Sequential - able to see steps involved, task oriented
  • Conservative - being careful in anything they do, thinking in the long term effects
  • Logical - one things follows another in order
  • Mathematical - able to grasp functions such as adding, counting etc..
  • Rational - drawing conclusions based on facts and reason
  • Analytical- taking things apart to see how it works
  • Factual - deals with issue's, not feelings
  • Quantitative - likes facts, measurable statistics
  • Critical - able to see faults and improvements
  • Technical - likes dealing with useful things
  • Organized- able to work step by step

The left brain controls handwritting, language, reading, phonics, locating facts, talking, reciting, following directions, listening, and numbers.

The right half or the right brain operates on a more intuitive( direct knowing of something without the use of reasoning) and creative level.

Right Brain Characteristics are :

  • Non verbal - more aware of things than language, such as printed, written or recorded
  • Intuitive - leaps of insight based on patterns, hunches, or images
  • Symbolic - able to remeber the symbols (stop sign) better than words
  • Emotional - often honest about feelings
  • Spatial - see things where parts go together ( such as puzzles)
  • Simultaneous- able to do two things at once, working on  two or more projects
  • Holistic - sees it all at once, perceives overall patterns and structures
  • Creative - makes new associations with using their imaginations
  • Artistic - reproduces images, colours with accuracy
  • Synthesized - puts things together to form whole
  • Conceptual -  able to draw conclusions,patterns,themes
  • Random -  works well (only) if intrested
  • Spiritual - more of religon

The  Right Brain controls spatial relationships, shapes, patterns, singing, music, art expression, visualization, emotion and colour sensitivity are strong points.

Helpful hints  to teach the whole Brain

  1. Mentor: guide your child's growth promote self respect and self existance.
  2. Use active learning techniques: reading, listening, and discussion
  3. Team learning: encouraging to work with a partner to share idea's and details
  4. Teach to both sides: say it, write it, picture it, act it out..,
  5. Use remembering skills: share the ones you know or help[ the child make up new one
  6. Use mind maps: present detailed, organized material in a colourful way.

I had a teacher...

I had a teacher that would stand in the middle of the black board, book in one hand chalk in the other.. When he got to the middle of the black board he would swap the chalk and the book and continue writing with the other hand...

Cheleinkal might remember him.. MR. Beacham...

Wow!
I have some characteristics from both! Do men/ or women use one side or another more ? Hmmm that's probally another reason why we are so different.

I will look into this...

I did this for a study in the local school on the 3/4  grade kids, while working as a Mentor I decided to do this project as you always hear them saying use your brain. I wanted to find out the so called difference in girl's verse's boys route. It isn't working out that way yet. Most of the kids were using both sides and most of the characteristics.

While the gr 2 kids using half  from the right and half from the  left characteristics.

While gr 1 kids  were only using 4 characteristics from each side.

It is interesting. It helps in buiding smarter kids.   Hopefully I 'll have the teaching ways and learning styles done by the end of next  week of what works on Left/right Brains.  Hopefully see you than!
