Six Silly Suggestions for Making Your Kid's Day

jenlemen by jenlemen Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 4th)
There's no faster way into a child's heart than to enter into their world of play.   If it's been awhile since you gave the little kid inside you a chance to come out and play, here are six simple tips that will put a smile on your child's face.
  1. Tell knock-knock jokes.  Even if your children are too young to tell a joke that makes good sense, they will take great joy in trying.   Over time, they will learn the art of putting a good pun together, and knock-knock jokes are a great place to start.   Let yourself laugh long and hard at the pure absurdity of it all.
  2. Have a dance party.  Nothing chases crabbiness away like turning up the radio and shakin' what your mama gave you.  Our best parties happen in the kitchen where everyone can let their hair down and show off their favorite moves.  No matter what the age of your little ones, everyone can move to the music.  Even five minutes will put a smile on even the littlest faces.
  3. Silly up your vocabulary.  There's a language of silliness most appreciated by the munchkin crowd.  Words like super-duper, okey-dokey, silly-billy are a good place to start.  Ask your kids to add more to your list from the forays on the school playground.  Everyone in your family will love the comic book exclamations as you go throughout your day.
  4. Be a poet who didn't even know it.  When routine has everyone worn out and grumpy, consider calling your Madeleine "Wadeleine".  Say yes, of course, you'd love to get your kids some milk and mookies, and see who has a terrific time setting you straight.  Another variation on this theme is to ask your child in mock seriousness, "I'm sorry, did you just ask me for a pracker?"
  5. Have your own super silly photo shoot.  Crowd in together and fill your frame with a series of silly self-portraits.  Hold the camera out in front of you and snap your heart away.  Your kids will love to see all the funny faces mom has to offer.
  6. Snuggle up.  Take some time for an extravaganza of love and affection.  Kiss eyelids, armpits, tummies and toes.  Make your show of love dramatic and playful.  Quieter children may prefer silent snuggling where hugs and whispers are the language of love.

Re: Six Silly Suggestions for Making Your Kid's Day

Thanks for the great ideas! I especially like the idea of  a poet that didn't know it. The developmental screener at my daughter's school just told me this morning that Lilly (my daughter) was having trouble with rhyming. This sounds like a great way to remedy that. Thanks again!

Heck Jen, I must've read this before and not known it... We silly up the same, and it sounds even more fun when you write it than it is when we do it.  Lovely down to earth advice that makes everybody smile (as usual).  Cheers, Lui ; )

Silly Games
Great reminder
We do all this and have a fantastic laugh. My daughter has A levels in dance so you can surely imagine what she has me doing much to the laughter of everyone else. My balance is so bad I spend most of the time on my back on the floor having toppled over!
We have photo booth on our computer which does all sorts  of distorted pictures on there.
Fabulous fun for everyone

Silly Fun
Oh the fun we have with cameras and jokes (really, really bad jokes) at our house.  And I have a son who can never say words correctly and I love that he can laugh at himself (cause we laugh at him a lot).  And dance, everyday baby.  Love your suggestions and although we do this stuff,  I needed a reminder about now.

We love the jokes!

Here's one to share. My son reckons he made it up but I suspect it was a rip-off...

What does a pirate say when he had too much sugar?

(in thick pirate-accent) SUGARMETIMBERS!

Thanks for the great advice!

SO great!

These are great ways to make the everyday extraordinary. The photo shoot thing is something we do all the time and they are some of my favorite pix. And you can't go wrong with dancing. Music tends to take the edge off of the evenings bwfore dinner when everyone is getting cranky. It's so important for children to see their parents get loose and shake it! Why do you think kids love going to weddings so much? They love to dance with their parents!

Great tips Jen!

Love them!!
It's so much fun to have a dance party! I love doing that with the kids on the karoke machine. Or to make chores more we all grab a mop/broom and pretend they are the mics!!  LOl Housework gets slowly done but.. it's too much fun to wanna stop and go on. Great ideas!!

works for adults too, at least in my household
Great advice. Both my husband and I are young at heart and have pretty much done all of the above, except knock-knock jokes where our sense of humor is of course way beyond our years . I think my son would have a blast, at least up until grade school.

Always dancing...

My son and I are always dancing around the house, we love it...  I remember one year back home at my parents my sister and I drove up to have Christmas with my mum, we got her a new CD player...  We were all in the kitchen.. All of us over the age of 20 dancing around the kitchen. We had a ball of fun... Nothing like good music and lots of laughs to lift spirits....

Fantastic suggestions.

SOunds like you have energy to burn.  You are totally right though kids just love any sort of fun with mums and dads.  We dance and sing around the lounge on weekeends to music on the tv shows and be silly and the kids go hysterical.

Brilliant

I can just sense your energy that you show your kids! I am the same! I love to shake what my mama gave me and in turn show my miss 2.5 how to shake her groove tha'ng!! :) We are really goofy at the best of times and she loves it! I happen to think that she really loves me - not just cos I am her mum but because I am most of the time at her level! We communicate really well! And I love it when she tells the kids with pride in her voice "thats my mum"!!

Your games are great!!! love em!~ love em! ~ love em!
