Halloween and Candy

rogerslili by rogerslili Talking(October 2006) (rank 450th)
You know it's coming...you can just feel it. It's everywhere, isn't it? All those pumpkins, the ghosts, and witch's pointy hats...Halloween, Halloween, this is Halloween. Heh.

So, what do you do with all that candy? We can't really take Trick-or-Treating away...it's a yearly festival of dressing up and being
silly! There is nothing so healing as being silly, you know. I have made an art form of it, to be sure! *giggle*

1: Always, ALWAYS go through your child's horde of candy before they do. Always. I can't stress this enough. There are some very bad people out there who would seek to harm our babies. Check things out.

2. Let your child help you go through the candy, once it has been checked and is found safe, so they can pick out the things that they like. It's inevitable that there will be some candy that they just find to be yucky, lol. Let them choose. (you can give away the rest or save it for yourself...I won't tell!)

3. Start two piles of candy, from the sorted pieces. Start with your child, and say, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me," and go like this until you've finished the pile. That way, they get Some and you get Some and it not only gives them a healthy dose of moderation, but it teaches sharing. These are two concepts that every child should know, IMO.

4: Put the candies into separate dishes or containers and set them up and out of reach of the child. In plain sight, it is too much of a temptation, and if they see where you've placed it, they will more than likely try to sneak some when you're not looking (nevermind that parents are given eyes in the backs of their heads upon the births of their children...). Remember what it was like for you, as a child. Candy is hard to walk away from, sometimes!! *grin*

5: Be firm. Set a time where everyone eats one or two pieces of candy, and be kind to yourself in this. Giving a child candy right before bedtime is asking for a headache, heh. Before school is asking for a parent-teacher conference, lol! (I allow my son to eat 2 pieces of candy afterschool, once his homework is done. That way, it does not spoil his dinner, but it gives him his treat at such a time that he can run it off before bed)  You decide. Afterall, you're the parent!!

Above all, have a Safe and Happy Halloween! I hope that it helps you with The Sillies.

here in the states, many hospitals will x-ray bags of candies after trick or treating. Also more and more churches and malls are organizing halloween evenings where instead of going around a neighborhood, you go from store to store or booth to booth this helps keep the uglies away. When we lived in a less kid-friendly dwelling, we used to take our little ones to the more affluent neighborhood across from their school on halloween. Many of their friends lived there, and it was homier than going around the apartments. Now our neighborhood does kind of block party where many of the grown-ups set up tables outside and eat hotdogs, chat and drink martinis while the kids go door to door. This is nice because it has such a festive atmosphere with everyone outside, and having all those parents outside works as a bit of a deterrent too.

I love the idea of a block party, you know where your kids are, they are safe and you can still enjoy the evening as well .. we too have the "malloween" where the malls allow the kids to trick or treat store to store, but it is generally held earlier in the day, which is fine for the little ones, but the older kids lose out because of being in school.. didnt realize that hospitals etc do xrays for candy, what a great idea, I think I will look into that to see if they do that here as well .. thanks!!!

Halloween Fun and Games
As an Australian now living in the States I have to admit it is a time I enjoy as much as my children.   I lvoe the costumes and the decorations and visiting the pumpkin patch to pick that perfect pumpkin to carve.  Candy has never been a real issue and I and so thankful for that ... the girls eat some and we end up throwing a whole batch out when rediscovering it at a later date.  We do limit though how much they eat and when ... the most fun though is the lead up and all that involves.

Halloween

I never had Halloween as a kid, two years ago I went trick or treating with my step daughter for the first time and it was just fantastic fun..  This year she is with her mum again but she wants to come back here with us so that she can take her little brother (She wants to dress him as a pirate)...    Yes sorting the candy is very smart advice... There are a lot of crazies out there and we need to be mindfull..

And I think the saying is one for you one for me, one for you and one, two for me...

My nephew is allergic to peanuts and managed to find lots of peanut less goodies so that he did not get left out.

Halloween

Great advice, rogerslili. I didn't used to be excited about holloween but since my son was born, it's a whole lot of fun. Last year, he was 7 months old and wasn't walking yet, but it didn't stop us from trick or treating! He was dressed up as a pumpkin. It was a lot of fun and it also gave us a chance to "meet & greet" our neighbors (people keep to themselves around here). We got lots of candies, and a couple of toys, which Matthew absolutely loved.

The hubby and I haven't yet decided what he'll be this year though.

Yay, Halloween is almost here!
I love the carmel apples that people make... Oh my are they good lol. I used to get everything in my pillow case(thats what i used, it holds more LOL) But once I got home after trick or treating I would sort through everything and trade stuff with my sister. It was fun!

I saw the word "caramel apple" and got a bit concerned. I'm sure you are cautious but I just want to go ahead and say it. Be careful! I've heard stories on the news about bad people, as rogerslili mentioned, that seek to harm kids. Some put razor blades inside the apples!

I actually had that happen to me .. there was a strange man that lived around the corner from me when I was little who made candy (caramel) apples and put odds and ends in them, screws, pieces of glass, etc. Thankfully no children where hurt and he was caught, but really taught me a life lesson thats for sure!!! I think I may be even over cautious now with my kids because of that!

Oh my goodness, that just gave me goosebumps. I'm thankful that no kids got hurt and most of all that the man got caught! I hope he rots in prison.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm sure you've just sent out a clear and immediate warning for all of us, parents.

Halloween in the uk.

Its not really a big thing here, some people go out trick or treating but its mostly house parties that people have, in a way I wish we did make a big deal of it like you do in the united states it sounds such fun (apart from people tampering with kids sweets, I can't believe people would do that!)

I too always go through the kids candy and throw away anything homemade from people we dont know as well as throw away anything that looks opened or "tampered" with .. my son always complains too while we are out trick or treating that he wants to try out some candy, so instead of chancing him getting a contaminated piece of candy we always buy a little bag of treats that day and sneak them into our supplies backpack .. you know the one with extra mitts ( its cold here on halloween ) water bottle, kleenex for the cold season runny nose ( always seems to happen at that time ) so when he asks for something we pretend to take something out of his goody bag but already have the candy in our hands, he never realizes it and makes him happy and keeps him safe till we can look through the bag!

Halloween!

We go through the kids candies and always throw away the homemade stuff.  We don't know these people and don't know what they have put in there.  Always throw the opened candies away, cause you never know!
