Brushing your uncooperative toddler's teeth and other unpleasantries

dramamom by dramamom Talking Back(October 2006) (rank 46th)

You know it needs to be done, but they never seem to want to do it.  Brushing teeth might just be the one thing toddlers like to do the least.  Our daughter had a hard time when we started using a brush on her teeth.  She wanted to do it herself, but of course, she only bites on the toothbrush.  Not exactly a good clean.  In the beginning, I held her and brushed her teeth while she complained.  I started singing This is the way we brush our teeth and making silly faces and brushing sounds.  Eventually she calmed down, even began to giggle.  I also began letting her "brush" after I was done, while I brushed my own.  Now, she even sticks out her tongue so I can give it a brush, too.  She also learns to brush properly by watching me.

I think the key to getting toddlers to do what they need to, but don't want to, is to make it fun.  Sing a silly song or do silly things.  You "surprise" your child into giggling and all of a sudden the thing they didn't want to do is now a hoot.  We have found this method works for just about anything; cleaning up, washing her face, diaper changes, etc.  So break out your inner child and have some fun!

How to help 11 month old to brush
My little Jacob has a mouth full of teeth at eleven months old and the most I have been able to do so far because he is so "immature" at this age is to either brush his front teeth myself or let him chew on the brush on his own which gets his back teeth. I think I need to step it up a notch and be more diligent with his oral care ... Does anyone else have an eleven month old with so many teeth ? Jacob has now twelve or more !! A friend of mine has a boy two months older and he has only two teeth so far ! Big difference ! Especially when you are trying to brush them, hahaha !

He likes it!

Wow, I had no idea, my son Loves to brush.  He get so excited and runs to the washroom yelling 'brush teeth! brush teeth!"

He does like to bite on the brush and suck off the toothpaste sometimes, but I always brush my teeth at  the same time, and he likes to be like mommy (or daddy).  I kneel down so we're face-to-face, and I exaggerate all the motions.  He even brushes his little tongue.

Too right.
Here here! We tickle our kids teeth. I think we all need to relax a bit with daily tasks and just have fun with them. It makes it alot more pleasant.

Just the advice I needed.

I have been having this problem with my daughter she clams her mouth shut the second I go anywhere near her with the toothbrush, I don't know why this hasn't occurred to me before as when she falls down or hurts herself we try to get her to laugh to ease the pain. I will definately try this when brushing her teeth.

Thank you for Great Advice!
