Traditions are extremely important for families. It is through traditions that we spend time with one another.
Here are some very easy October traditions to use with your family:
1) PUMPKIN CONTEST : Host a pumpkin carving contest with neighbors or family members. Have each
family member decorate or carve the pumpkin. You can make catagories such as the funniest, scariest, or simply the best all around pumpkin. You can have awards for the catagories.
2) GIVE AND TREAT!
Most children look forward to being able to trick or treat in the neighborhood. However, you can share with your family that some children are not able to trick or treat due to an illness. Make it a family event to put together some bags for your local hospital, homeless shelter, or some other agency that your children might enjoy giving towards. Prepare some bags with stickers, silly straws, or other items. Have your children take the bags. Attach a card saying, " This year Halloween comes to you." Make it a tradition to remind your child how fortunate they are and teach them to give to others.
3) MUSICAL CHAIRS : Invite each guest for your party to bring a costume. Put it in a paper bag undermeath each chair. Play some scary Halloween music. When the music stops, each person must wear the costume that is in their bag. Be prepared for an evening of laughs. Make sure you take a picture of the costumes for your October photo album.
4) GINGERBREAD HOUSE: You don't have to wait till Christmas to make a gingerbread house. Make a scary Halloween gingerbread house. The tradition is spending time together and working towards completing a project together.
5) MAGIC PUMPKIN PATCH: Take your child outside and have them place some candy corn on the grass. Tell your children that you have found some "magic pumpkin seeds". Have your child bury 3-5 peices of candy on the grass. Place a toothpick in the grass as a marker. Prepurchase some small pumpkins. While they are sleeping, replace the toothpick with the small pumpkins. The tradition is to spark some magic in your Halloween.
