Pretend play

Rachall by Rachall Talking(October 2006) (rank 98th)

I just cannot get my head around pretend play.

It's like my gifts they are always practical I find it a waste of money otherwise.

I bought a cubby with a fridge and stove for my chidren and both love it but I just cannot get myself

out there to play with them.  It's not hot by any means it's under the patio.  Sometimes it's time that is needed but I just cannot seem to pretend.

When a child sees you doing the everyday tasks like housework, cooking/baking, caring for the family etc they will take notice and will then modile that behaviour.

You should be consistent and show your children what behaviour you want them to model. For example my husband and I do the housework and cooking to show our son that it is not only the woman's role to do these jobs.

Whatever the pretend play you want them to do, buy them or make them the pieces to help them along for example a stove, kid sized broom etc.

When I was growing up I had a cubby house that I had pretend furinture in so I could play house. Noone came out and pllayed with me, but I modled my behaviour off my parents.

pretend play for mummy
Why not try you pretending being the kid (or the baby) in the "cubby family" house?
It sometime hard to pretend to be something that you are in real life.

You pretending to be the child of the cubby family may also be a fun way to deal with any behavioural issues that may arise. For example "the kid" may keep telling tales on dolly to "cubby mummy", or "the cubby kid" may keep using a whining voice, saying "I am hungry! What's for dinner." This type of reverse role playing can make a child more aware of how their "real life" behaviour effects their parents in real life.

pretend play
you could also try searching the net reasearching 'mature imaginative/pretend play'  any names like Piaget, Vygotsky or MOntessori that come up would be good to have a look at too. You don't really know exactly what benefits they get out of this pretend play until you read some of the stuf!!

It is easier when you like to play too.
Your kids will copy whatever you do and I like to role play with them. I have heard them playing families where one pretends to be me and one pretends to be mum.
Very interesting to watch and a real eye opener on some of things they pick up from you.

i get myself out there and pretend play with my 3.7 year old. She love's it and does copy everything i do, and loves to watch me cook, clean etc and does help me alot in cooking and housework, which i never stop her doing. I love playing pretend games with my daughter. We both have a great bond together because of this.

I hear where you are coming from.

Sure it's good to show them how to do things but I want to get down with them and play.

One episode on the nanny they bought food and played shop.  Like that I would not be able to last long.  I would play a couple of rounds of playing and then I would be bored.

Yesterday I played outside instead of the cubby as I suggested to my chldren.  I did follow the lead of my son and we ended up playing with sticks and we were pirates.  This was fun.

I will have to go and buy them a broom and a mop as my son constantly wants to play with mine and it gets wrecked moping the concrete.

O

Pretend play

What is it really true that men do house work too.. Cool... Any tips on getting my hubby to do that..

Another great pretend game is to play school.. Have your children be the teachers and you the student....  That way you get told what to pretend.

Pretend play
My hubby does it if I am having a day off, he also likes a clean and tidy house so that is his incentive.

Pretend Play
My kids have a similar set up, but sometimes we make it like a shop and I'm the shopper and they sell me all sorts of things, my kids are the ones that do the pretending I just go along with whatever they decide, they will give me icecream so I pretend to lick my wonderful icecream etc...   I just get into kid mode and have fun with them.
