"Mommy-Approved" snack drawer for kids

travelgirl8 by travelgirl8 Talking(October 2006) (rank 192nd)
Today as I was unpacking the groceries, I realized another handy tip that works very well in our household. Not sure why I hadn't thought to share it before. It's a small drawer just for "pre-approved" healthy snacks for the little man (although all of us seem to dig in).
We also created this along with the kid dish cupboard (read more about that here) when we moved into our new place just about 7 months ago.

I fill it up with yummy snacks that the little man can have pretty much anytime he asks for a snack. It includes such items as: granola bars, boxes of raisins, handi-snacks, peanut butter and crackers - the cookies and special treats usually do not make it into this drawer for obvious reasons. However, once in awhile I will add some fruit roll-ops, chips, etc.. for special treats.

This way he can easily get the snack himself and has a choice. He's also very excited to check out whats new when I come home from the store. OR when he goes grocery shopping with me, he gets to pick something for the "snack drawer" which also eleviates his need to get a treat for being good while shopping (an old habit).

Now that we have started Kindergarten, he can also help pick out what he wants for a snack at school!

Have fun snacking!

snack drawer for kids
Sounds like a great idea to me! One we get into a bigger place than what we are in now(and when my daughter is older) i will defiently be putting something togeter like that. Just like what Jess said, my husband and i have a place in the top cuppboard for our snacks or sometmes they are on top of the fridge, which she can't get at, even when shes older.

I have something similar in place for my Miss. I love the fact you are giving the kids a choice but at the same time that are still asking/using manners.

I think I will put this into action...

This is a great Idea and I think I will put this into action... My son is still only 16 months but I have a 10 year old step daughter who is always asking for snacks.. I think I will take her shopping and ask her what she would like in the draw.. When my son is a little older I will do the same for him.. My husband has a snack cupboard which is out of reach from the children so they don't go in there all by themselves, way to much sugar in the cupboard, although I have managed to sneak a few granola bars in there that the hubby actually likes... ..

thanks for the brilliant Idea

What a great idea
This could save me from my son trying to get his own snacks off the counter.  LOL.   I'll give it a try this week.

I like the snack draw system.
I think it is a great idea and something we could use at home. I would have to police when they can access it as they often will try and top up before their meal and then not bre hungry.

I completely understand the "monitoring" and I actually do the same. He was already so used to asking for snacks, that he still does it. But now it's "Can I get a snack from the snack drawer?". And if I have any of those "special treats" in there, he'll even ask if he can have that versus the granola bar or raisins, etc... Good point. Thanks!

I have the same thing in my house for my son.  I bought i large basket for the pantry and my son knows that this is his snacks.  He's 10 now but we have had it since he was about 7.  works a treat.
