Attending Ante-Natal Classes

Bethdyl by Bethdyl Talking(October 2006) (rank 152nd)

I am not sure if you have ante-natal classes where you are but we have them here in Australia.  If you don't or call them something different, they are information classes about pregnancy and birth.  I would highly recommend them to first time parents-to-be.  When I had my first

child we attended the classes.  The information about the drugs available for the birth, the effects and the pros and cons of each one was invaluable.  I had no idea what was available and what it did.  There was lots of information about the different types of labour you go through, the different types of birthing options available and problems that may occur.  We made birthing plans, which had what we expected, what we wanted to happen in the birthing suite, who we wanted there etc..

Although they can't prepare you for the labour (nothing can!!) they can inform you as much as possible.  My first labour was 28 hours long and if I hadn't been to the class I think I would have panicked when the first contraction came and rushed to hospital.  Instead I knew there were stages and tried (emphasise 'tried'!) to remain calm and work through it.

They were actually fun, it was a group parents-to-be and we bcame friends over the weeks it went for several weeks (one a week nightly for about 1hour).  There always seems to be the class clown (my hubby for ours) and it was very light hearted and great.

I have had all my children at the same hospital and with my 2nd and 3rd the midwife who remembered me (amazing how they remember) borrowed my newborn babies and took them to her class and bathed them.  The parents-to-be loved it, and it gave me a chance to have a 45 minute hot shower!!!!

Worthwhile

Even when you have your next child theya re worth while.  One of the ladies in my group was on her third child, the other two were 5 and 3yo.  But she said that things changed each time, and she always learnt something new.

On the other hand, when I was in hospital a lady having her second child (first child was under 2) hadnt been.  her thought was how much could have chnaged in two years?  Answer;  Heaps!  So if you have them in your area, make the effort to go.  It is certainly worth it, even just for reassurance and knowing that there are others in similar stage of pregnancy and experiences similar hardhships, questions and decisions.
Peace

Information
is key especially for your first the classes are well worth it and although my partner and I did not attend any other session except our first it was an eye opener. Sadly my partner gave birth by c-section which apparently is more stressful to bub as he is lifted out quicky and without any notice. Can you imagine being suddenly taken from a nice comfy warm place into the bright lights and cold theater? poor little one was a little shell shocked I think, they did have to chase him to get him too in there he apparently moved right under her ribs near her heartbeat when the dr's hands came for him!

Our 6 week ante natal class was changed to a one day marathon
I am looking forward to the antenatal class. I signed up for a 6 week class but then they changed it to a one day marathon. The midwife running the class would prefer the 6 weeks but her boss and many of the other parents booked in for the class wanted a one day. Apparently we won't get to cover as much either.
I am quite disappointed. The class is coming up at the end of the month. I hope I am not too tired to take it all in. I don't think that we will get the same level of interaction with the other parents either. We are fairly new to town so I was looking forward to meeting other parents to be.

Could you book into another one??? I am not sure if they had one here in Canada. Things went so fast for me, and being english in a French place I had no where to start looking....  But in the end I had my wonderful mother in-law there to help me though it all from a womans point of veiw so that was nice.... And of course the hubby as well...

I would have to travel 60 kilometres to the next town to book into another one before our baby is due. It is likely that it would be an evening class. My husband doesn't drive because of his epilepsy and I get very tired in the evenings so I think I am just stuck with the one day course.
It is good that you get on so well with your mother in law.
