PUTTING YOUR KIDS TOYS TO LONGER USE

cleannut by cleannut Talking Back(October 2006) (rank 110th)

KIDS NOWADAYS EITHER HAVE A ROOM CLUTTERED WITH TOYS OR WANT A NEW TOY.  I  FELL IN  BOTH CATEGORIES. WHEN TOY CLUTTER GOT 2 OVERWELMING I'D PICK UP THE TOYS AND PUT THEM AWAY. IT WAS  TIME COMSUMING AND GETTING MY BOYS TO PICK THEM UP WAS  DAUNTING.

FINALLY , I CAME UP WITH A SOLUTION  AND IT WORKED FOR  SOME TIME.. 50 TOYS  EVERY SAPE SIZE AND FUNCTION ,,THEY COULD ONLY PLAY WITH SO MANY TOYS AT ANY GIVEN TIME.  I TOLD  ALL 3 OF MY BOYS TO PICK  5 TOYS AND THE REST GET PUT AWAY IN STORAGE FOR A WEEK. ONCE WEEK IS UP THEY PUT BACK SOME OR ALL THE TOYS AND PICK ANOTHER  5 TOYS.  IF THEY WANTED ANOTHER TOY IN THE WEEK THEY HAD TO CHOOSE WHICH TOY THEY WANTED TO PUT BACK BEFORE THEY GOT ANOTHER ONE. DID I MENTION A  PLASIC TUB SEPERATED VARIETY OF TOY. CARS TRUCKS ECT IN ONE TUB. ACTION  FIGURES  IN ANOTHER TUB AND SO ON. THAT MADE LOOKING FOR A CERTAIN TOY ALOT FASTER AND EASIER. THE PROBLEM AROSE WHEN ONE OR ALL HAD FRIENDS OVER.. FRIENDS BROUGHT TOYS OVER MAKING MY BOYS WANT MORE THAN THEIR WEEKLY FIVE. SUDDENLY THEY WANTED A TOY LIKE THEIR FRIENDS, AND THEIR FRIENDS WANTED TOYS LIKE THIERS. THAT SPARKED ANOTHER IDEA AND THIS WAS A BRAINSTORM AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED. SAVED ME  MONEY ALSO. I WOULD PHONE  KIDS FRIENDS PARENTS AND SEE IF THEY HAD THE SAME TOY DELIMMAS I HAD, THEY HAD. SO I ASKED THEM ABOUT A TOY TRADE UP. THEIR KIDS BRING TOYS THEY NO LONGER LIKE OR PLAY WITH AND COME TO MY HOUSE . MY BOYS DID THE SAME. THEY MIXED AND MATCHED , BARTERED AND BANTERED.  KIDS TRADED  AND WENT HOME HAPPY.  WORD GOT OUT ABOUT THIS AND BEFORE I KNEW IT MORE AND MORE KIDS ASKED AND CAME TO THE TOY TRADE UP. SELECTIONS WERE AWSOME. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO STORY BOOKS OR NOVELS FOR OLDER KIDS.EVERY 6 MONTHS I HAD A TOY TRADE UP PARTY.  ONLY EXPENCE I INCURRED WAS THE COOKIES AND MILK I SERVED WHILE  THE TRADING  WENT ON. ONE OF THE BEST TOYS I'VE FOUND FOR KIDS FROM 5-12  ARE LEGGOS. MY SON WAS STILL PLAYING WITH THOSE LEGGOS WHEN HE WAS 14 AND BORED.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE, HAVE FUN

We seperate toys
I am pushed for space here, so I seperated E's toys early on, and she does tend to take only from one area at a time, a big toy from the toy chest, or a couple of cars from the car box, or baby doll grooming toys from the small drawer, or blocks and musical instruments from the larger drawer.  Even if more than one box is broached at a time it does make tidying up quick and easy because everything fits when seperated out.
Peace

Good idea
First, I think it's better you type the article in lower case. It's hard to read when they're all CAPs sound like you shouting too. Sorry about that.
Second, it's a good idea to trade toys. Never think about it, usually old toys we just gave away for donations or sell on ebay. Thanks for sharing.

treasure hunt for little old toys
something i have seen at church bazaars and some birthday parties is a treasure hunt - they fill a sandbox and bury all the little plastic toys you get from kids meals and pinatas (that accumulate like crazy) and kids get a timed dive in for a token or as a prize for winning a game. Great for tiny kids too. Just make sure if you are talking toddlers the little toys are too big to swallow, or that mom or dad guide the finding.
