loosing the dummy

Anonymous Author (October 2006)
The way i got my daughter to loose the dummy was always to hide in under her toys that was on her bed, or to tell her that it was one of her toy's turns to have the dummy tonight. I did this for about a week or so, and after that, she didn't want a dummy anymore.

lost dummy
I accidentley forgot to pack Zacs dummy when he was off the child care when he was 2 1/2 and i told him that we had lost it, surprisingly there was little fuss. Zac used to be OBSESSED with his dummy he couldn't go 2 minutes without it so i was really surprised at how easy it was to lose it. I guess i just got lucky and the timing must have been right.

dummy tree...

I know a trick that worked with a friends child,

They planted a dummy tree....

'Lets plant your dummy in the garden to get a dummy tree to grow from it', so her 2 year old planted it in the garden, & watered it everyday, waiting for the tree to grow. About a week later my friend planted a little shrub on top of the dummy. Her daughter was excited to see something grow from that spot, but by then was over the dummy thing!

I'm planning to do this with my kids, as my youngest daughter has started to bite holes in her dummy..... I'll try after her 3rd bithday & Christmas. She only has it when she sleeps anyway -

My son on the other hand, being a year younger, might not want to give it up so easily.

And how can I let one have one but not the other......?

dummy tree...
You could always tell them about the tree that might grow and ask who wants to give it a try... Maybe they both will, maybe only one will..  I think that is a great Idea.. Makes me wish my son used a dummy.. I think I'll go and plant a tree anyway..

losing the sucker
My daughter sucked her "tee-tee" so much, she sucked a hole into it. She was 19mths. When I bought her a new one, she wanted nothing to do with it. It didn't feel like the other-- which we had already thrown in the garbage. She didn't ask for another.

dummy gone
we lived in a 3rd floor unit and my son used to love throwing things over the balcony.  so when he threw his dummy over i told him that was it.... "dummy gone" he cried for about half an hour and that was it.  He was 2 at the time and even i was surprised that it was that easy?

Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing your idea, we would remove my sons dummy and say it was lost after a while he stopped asking for it, didn't start sucking his thumb, he was about 3 1/2 when we did this

Fuss
I have no problem with my child always wanting his dummy he has a bottle of juice or water and will suck on that until his tum is full, this may be a solution for parents trying to get rid of a dummy. Good luck to all parents who have a dummy wanter coz some children will turn to their thumb and this phase can last a long time!

I'm also curious...
Of how old your daughter was too.  People are continually making comments about my son still having one, but there is a lot of thumb sucking in my family.  And too this day, if he wants something to suck on he will take his "binky" with no question.  But if for whatever reason he can't find it he will automatically use his thumb with no fussing or bothering about his lost binky.  So as you can see I would prefer him to have the binky, because I can always take it away one day. Can't cut off a thumb, as my parents found out.  He's 15 months, when do most people take them away???

How old?
How old was your daughter when you started this?  My daughter only uses the dummy for bedtime right now and it helps her sleeps through the night. I'm afraid that when I start this, she'll wake up many times asking for it.
