Keep Focussed and Don't Let Your Children Distract You From What you Have to Do.

Frontier by Frontier Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 20th)
This advice is for those who find they never get everything done that they planned because they loose focus or let other things pull them away from their chores.
This is common when you have children at home with you. You may start the day with the best of intentions
and finish it wondering where the day went.

Here are a few easy steps to help you keep focussed and still keep your children happy.

  1. Make a list of what has to be done the night before. This helps you to get out of bed with purpose and reduces the need to sleep in.
  2. When you get up, get dressed completely before you leave your bedroom. If you go to the kitchen in your pj,s, underwear or half dressed you will not fully apply yourself and your productive day will not really start until you are dressed.
  3. Plan your day with rostered activity time with your child / children and plan things they can do while you do other things you need to do. If you leave them to entertain themselves they will soon either come to you for a solution or make other activities for you to do (usually indicated by a child who becomes too quiet and rolls of toilet paper or flour across the floor ).
  4. Divide your list into A's and B's (if you have c's you may be planning too much for the day).
  5. Put estimated times for each activity on your list. That way you can do short jobs first and tick them off as this gives you momentum to do the rest.
  6. Plan spare time into your day. This can be used for unfoseen changes to your day or used to reward yourself if your list is up to date.
  7. Plan you meals and short breaks into your day. If you do not eat properly you will feel flat and take longer to do your chores.
  8. Drink lots of water. Don't drink a glass at a time just sip from a bottle or glass each time you pass your water source. Plenty of water will keep you feeling active and alert. You will find it easier to keep focussed and be more energetic for your kids.
  9. Any chores you did not complete can be put on the following days list.
  10. Write your task list for the next day.
Thses are just a few tips to keep you focussed and productive every day. It helps you get things done and still have quality time for your children. You will feel good about yourself and be a great parent and friend for your children.

Nice
Great tips Frontier.  I'm a BIG fan of "to do" lists.  For me, there is nothing better than reaching the end of the day and knowing that I was able to get stuff accomplished.  And so true about getting dressed right away.  My motivation level significantly decreases when I don't :)

I see the Flylady's influence in here

Hi Frontier
Great advice. I like the way you have broken the advice into points. It makes it easy to read.

I found the Fly Lady's website in one of you previous articles and signed up. I can see her influence in your advice (not copied just influenced) and like the way you have further developed and expanded on it..

i do this
I do the planning thing etc already. I've done it since miss3.7 was born. I actually started doing  it ( just practice ) while i was pregnant. I'm an organised person anyway before she was born, but once my daughter was born, i was even more organised, but it's great advice you have given.

Keep Focussed and Don't Let Your Children Distract You From What you Have to Do.

I know what you mean.. My normal morning start of was like this......

Wake up with Francis, change nappy, hope I don't step in dog pee on the way.. Take dog out side for pee if I did not step in any... Set Francis in his high chair give him breakfast thow something for the dog to keep him happy while Francis ate...  Which often took awhile because he was to busy laughing at me throwing stuff for the dog...

This morning (and this is how I hope it will stay),  Woke up before Francis, hoped not to step in pee (did not), took dog out for pee. Came back in had shower got fully dressed.. Francis woke up, changed nappy, pop him in his high chair as the dog had already been out for a bit before Francis woke up he was happy to eat his own food instead of waiting for francis to share so I managed to get the dishes done, and even stuck a load of washing on.. Thankfully all these area's can be seen from the high chair so I was chatting with francis the whole time he was eating... Happy way to start the day..  Most people like to start their day with a coffee. Me I like to start it with a shower....

Oh yes jess!  There is nothing like getting up, washed and dressed to be ready to take on a day.  We dont have a shower, just a bath here, and it makes such a difference to me!  I tend to procrastinate more as a result.
Peace
