Breastfeed While Sick

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(October 2006) (rank 3rd)

Today's first time parenting tip - Continue breastfeeding your baby even if you're sick

This may fly in the face of your instincts, but breastfeeding while you're sick can actually help your baby combat any disease he might contract from you.

Chances are, you passed along any

germs or bacteria for the illness you've got before you even started showing symptoms, so your baby has already been exposed to what you've got.

Secondly, by the time you're showing symptoms, you're also producing antibodies to fight off the illness. If you stop breastfeeding, you're denying your baby the help he needs to fight that specific illness, just like you are.

breastfeeding while sick
very true! the fact is that with breastfed babies they have their mothers antibodies to help them combat ilnesses so its unlikely they will catch common colds from you anyway. on the other hand tho please contact doc if u think u have contracted a serious illness and they will advise you as to whether its a good idea to breastfeed. blood diseases can cross over through breastmilk.breast is best!

Be careful what you take
This is good advice but I would add a word of caution - if you are sick and considering taking any form of medication PLEASE check with your doctor first to make sure it is safe to take when breastfeeding.

Breastfeed
Also prevents mastitus unless you are very good at expressing. Breastmilk is the most perfect food for children under 12mths. So well suited to your bub's individual needs.

Breasfeeding while sick

I totally agree.  Within the first month of me breasfeeding my daughter, I got a bad bout of bronchitis.  My doctor prescribed anitbiotics that did not affect the breast milk in any great way.  I told him that I was wearing a mask so as not to pass on germs and he told me it was not necessary as my daughter would be fine, and that she would be develop antibodies.  Turns out he was right.  My daughter never got sick, and has never been sick in her entire 2 1/2 years.
