Intelligent Toddlers

exquisite-flower by exquisite-flower Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 12th)

Apparently children are at their most intelligent they will ever be in their lives at 18 months old**.  When E was 18 months we were travelling, so I exposed her to as much as I could.  Nowadays I tell E all sorts, figure that if she doesnt understand now,

she will one day and she soaks up a lot more than i realise.  I hear her talking to family and friends about things we have mentioned even in passing, and she is intelligent in her conversation.  So never feel that you cant talk about a subject with them.  I just hope that she continues to be as bright when she starts school!!!

Peace

kids are smarter than we give them credit for
especially when they are young. I tell everyone to tell them early cos one day they will understand and you have already started teaching them so you cant lose!
The boys always suprise me with what they know!!

me too!  E sharpened a pencil by herself yesterday.  Right over the bin - like a big kid does.  I just watched in silence, then she found a piece of scrap paper and drew her puppet show on it before bringing it to me for the writing.  I was amazed and so pleased with her maturity and awareness of her limitations, but also her abilities and how she always pushed the boundaries - but in a way that is safe.  She is so sensible....ok, so I am proud of her right now.....lol
peace

I have heard this too...
Yep I have heard this as well, which is why we have been told it is very important to continue speaking two languages to our son so that he will by the time he really gets to talking will be fully bilingual.   But I just love it when I can see that he is understanding what I am saying.  And my is he a little chatter box. He has started pointing at things now which is also great, it is a little easier for me to understand what he wants. He is always talking when he points so I am glad for that because I'd hate for him to be a grunt and point kind of kid. If you know what I mean.. My step daughter was a grunt and point until mummy figures out what she wants.

Toddlers
Yes the early years are so important. My daughter is such a talker and absorbs much more than you think. i try to expose my kids to as much as i can. My boys are 17 months now and i am really noticing how much they are taking in now!

i did and do the same
I let my child watch me in everything i do. It's the only way they're going to learn. When someone comes over like family members and they've got kids too or even friends etc, i let them mimic them all the time. It's great for her to do that. I think it's the only way they're going to learn.
