Re: Solid foods

What is the best way to balance baby food and formula when first introducing solid foods?

Hi. I am going through this now myself.

I thoguht I would pass on the advice that has been given to me by my doctor and Child and Youth Health

nurse.

When introducing solids, start at once a day with rice cereal as a good first food.  Then you reduce bottles down by 1

Then in four -7 days time, start feeding twice a day with rice cereal or the same first food you started with. Still only reducing bottle feeds by 1.

then, in another weeks time, you can give 3 small portions a day of rice cereal.

And then you reduce your feeds down by 2.....depending on the child.

It is important to note(so I have been told) that first foods are only really tastes, and complimentary to bottle or breast feeding.

After that, I have been told that you can introduce new foods every 4 days, noting not to mix them with other foods so you can know for sure if and what your child has an allergy to.

This type of method worked for my son, and kids will always have preferences to what they like and dislike

Happy feeding

Didn't work for us
Tried and failed at that exact method and about 10 other methods that were suggested.

I think the main thing is your child has a bottle mainly for hunger relief or for it's soothing effects.  mine is a sooth sucker, so depriving her of a bottle in favour of rice cereal or any number of other things was never going to be easy.

I have her now eating 3 very small meals per day and she has only ever filled herself up on solid foods twice and that has been within the past 7 days. She's nearly  months old.

Didn't work for us

Hi. Iam sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. My son now 2 and 8 months had, and still kind of sooth sucks too. However, he eats 3 meals a day, and 3 snacks (if I am lucky a day) I think they need to learn that at some stage, sucking is not going to bring them all the fulness and nutrients that they need. But, your child will let you know when they are ready for more than just bottles and what you are currently feeding them in solids. As long as you are not increasing their milk intake, they will eventually do this on their own.

And I think you are right in saying that in soothe suckers it isn't going to be easy, and sometimes they don't even feed for the sake of the feed, do you use a dummy? I didn't catch the age of your child, it said my child is already months old....if you give me their age it might help a little. But r est assured, soothe suckers lose their want to suck when they realise that mum isn't going to give them any more bottles to compensate for soild food.
