Pregnancy: Picking a name for your baby |

You have gotten your 20 week ultrasound and found out the sex of your baby. If you are like us, you have waited to find out the sex of the baby before even discussing names to narrow down the potential arguments to one gender. But there are several things you
can do to make the choice a little easier.
- Buy a baby name book. Sometimes it's easier to find the perfect name if you sort through 20,000 names that you definitely don't like. Baby name books are also great because they tell you the meanings and origins of the names.
- Ask family and friends. Another great sorting process, you can find out very quickly what names you like or really don't like. If you ask the older generation, you may find that you like a family name that perhaps you would not have considered.
- Make a list. When I was pregnant with Ethan, we made two lists--one for each of us. We went down the list and determined what names the other had suggested that we absolutely did not like. That helped us take of list of around 30 names and reduce it to about 6. Six is a lot easier to deal with than 30. I crossed Cassius off Derek's list. I just didn't see naming our son after a Roman emperor.
- Have a sibling or even the dog pick out the new baby's name. My nephews decided that Lucy was their sister's name before she was born. The day she was born, Lucy it was. A friend put down 3 names on slips of paper and put them in a ball cap. He then instructed his dog to pick out on of the pieces of paper. That was the name that went on their baby's birth certificate.
These are just a few ideas about fun ways to decide the name of your new baby. Good luck naming yours.
