Safety in your Driveways

Frontier by Frontier Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 15th)
As we come into the holiday season and have the children around home more often it is time to think about how safe it is at home especialy when we are using machinery and vehicles. Both parents and children can be lulled into a false sense of security because they are
at home and that is when unforseen accidents can occure.
I am writing this as I remember a close call we had in our own driveway and tragic stories I hear every year just after Christmass and in the early part of the new year. Last year our car was being washed in the driveway and the boys where playing in the back yard / decking area which runs into the driveway. We are always careful to see where the kids are when we move the car but on this occaision my wife left the car to get a bucket of water and the car rolled backwards into the side of the house (yes the old leave the hand brake off trick) right where the children ride their bikes. Lucky they had just moved to another part of the yard.

Every year for the past few years I have heard sad stories of young children (usually toddlers) being run over by thier own parents in thier own driveways usually resulting in the death of the child. often there is a story of the child riding thier new trike or car they got for Christmass or birthday behind the car and the parent reverses over them. I think about the guilt the parent suffers and of course the loss of the child.

Here are few things to remember when we are using our cars in driveways and back yards.
  • our homes are as dangerous as anywhere else if we drop our guard and create a dangerous environment
  • children do not sense danger like we do and will walk into the path of a car
  • toddlers have not developed the ability to understand and react to sounds or moving objects as we adults do
  • always keep your child in sight or in the care of another adult when moving your car
  • you cannot see a child behind a car so if you are unsure where they are, do not move the car, get out and make your child safe
  • if you are on your own put the child in the car with you while you move it
  • turn off any distractions (car music systems ) while you are in a car with children around
  • never leave you vehicle unnatended regardless of your engine status (running or not) as we all can make mistakes and it is easy to take a handbrake off and send a car rolling out of control

Be alert when working with cars and children and never take shortcuts even if we are running late.

Driveway safety

In my neck of the woods we have children hit by their parents every year. One of the best safety things to do with your car when you get home is back the car into the drive and use the emergency break. Take the time to be safe, backing into the drive take a few extra secs do it. Its the law in some places.

Hear, Hear!
Any tips to improve the safety of our children are good tips.  We had to completely revamp our school's pick-up/drop-off zone because a student got hit.  Only a little bump, thank goodness.  It's a good reminder that these things happen at home, too.

IT is frightening...
My son's favorite game I am trying to make him stop is to run around our cars when they are parked in the driveway.. It scares me that he does this.  If I chase him he just runs faster and thinks it is a game.   I always stop him and turn him round when i do catch him.. But for some reason he loves to do it.     Hopefully I will be able to break this habbit soon....

camera
definately! it was worth what we paid for it (i think $1500, but it vary's depending on brand ect,) i had no idea just how much easier it would make my life until we had one put in, you can see everything, when you put the car in reverse it turns on and you can reverse right up to an object without hitting it,lets not forget you can't run any kids over either as you can see everything behind you which is why we bought it, it is also GREAT for parking it makes parking a large vehicle so much easier, i recomend anyone with a big car to get one they won't regret it

Thank you I shall look into it. As well as saving a child or pet it could save a panel beaters bill.

our camera dosn't have a beeper but you can see very clearly all around the back of our vehicle right down to the ground, your mums camera dosn't sound very good if she can't see very well behind her, i wonder if its got anything to do with the size of the camera or the brand, i supose this is something people would have to look into first then when purchasing a camera if there is such a big difference in camera products, we just asked for the best one they had and our is brilliant

Good advice
Great advice again Frontier. We recently bought a bigger car so we could fit in with the baby and the baby gear. I find that my rear vision in this car is not great. I am considering getting a reversing camera.
