Gifts for Teachers: At Christmas or Anytime

dramamom by dramamom Talking(October 2006) (rank 84th)

Since others are writing about Christmas, I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

As a teacher I have received so many gifts over the years.  Most of which were candles, bath sets, and other knick-knacks that I just didn't know what to do with or where to put them.  My house isn't that big.  So, what do you give a teacher?  Here are some suggestions for meaningful and useful teacher gifts:

  • If you know the teacher well, get him/her something they will really like.
  • Gift certificates for a local coffee shop. (Here in Canada, we love Tim Hortons coupons!)
  • Gift certificates for a teacher supply store.  (We always need more things for the classroom.)
  • Books for the classroom library.  Choose appropriate ones you know your own child enjoys.
  • Tickets to a local theatre.
  • Gift cards for a local restaurant or movie theatre. (Some teachers especially need encouragement to get out and have some fun.)
  • Let your child pick out the gift.  It's much more meaningful, for the teacher and your child, if the gift is really from the student.
  • Let your child make a gift.  Also means a lot more.
  • Hand-made cards are more special as well.  Make sure you write something, too.
  • A coupon for classroom help (if permitted in your child's school).

The point is, don't get something because you feel you have to give something tangible.  Teachers are just like everyone else.  We like things that we can use and things that don't take up space.

Another thing to keep in mind:  You don't need to spend lots of money .  It's actually a little embarrassing and uncomfortable when parents spend too much on a gift.

Just remember, teachers like any expression of appreciation.  They want to know that you support them and stand behind them.  Christmas, well anytime, is a great time to tell them that.

Re: Gifts for Teachers: At Christmas or Anytime

Alright, this is now significant for me. I had just given Matty's 2 preschool teachers gift cards. I got a simple brown gift bag that I asked Matty to decorate so that it's personalized. :-) May I ask what is too little and what is too much when it comes to the amount of the gift card, if you don't mind?

I gave the teachers each $20 gift cards. I may not be able to give even that much as my kids grow up and expenses sky rockets, but I don't want to give too small that it's laughable.

Re: Gifts for Teachers: At Christmas or Anytime
I've received $10 in Tim Hortons coupons and been perfectly happy.  If you have to give more than one gift, don't feel like you need to spend a lot.  $10 is just fine, in fact $5 is fine.  I love that you got Matthew to decorate the bags, cute idea.  Anything over $25 is too much; that's when it gets awkward.

Super advice. We alway's buy a couple of books at the end of the year for the class library and a book token for the teacher at Christmas. We are very passionate readers and think that the written word can bring different experiences for different people. A book token allows teacher to treat themselves or the class and invest in some books to suit their teaching style.

Great Advice!
I am a teacher as well and I agree with everything you've said!  One year I had a parent and a child write a thank you note as a Christmas gift.  That was my favorite.   It was nice to know that they thought of me and appreciated my hard work.  I still have it tucked away for when I've had a rough day or need some encouragement.

Great Advice!
I still have a note a student gave me just before I left on maternity leave.  At that time I was still planning on going back to work.  The note still encourages me even though I'm now a stay-at-home mom.

Thanks
Thank you so much for your comments.  I have 4 children and struggle every year with what meaningful present to give their teachers.  Not wanting to get tacky gifts but ones that their teachers will really like.  Again thank you.
