ADHD

Hi Kevin and others.

I believe ADHD exists, along with bipolar disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, asthma, allergies, fetal alchohol syndrome, high-functioning autism....I have adopted sons and they live with combinations of the above.  Most people who do not believe something exists have never experienced the problem.  I also believe the methods of managing a disease or disorder are different from one individual to another.  Sometimes meds are not needed.  Many times for ADHD meds are necessary along with therapy and behavior modification...it's a bit difficult to help a child modify a behavior if you cannot hold his/her attention.  Disorders such as bipolar have no "chemical" test to prove it's existence either, but live with a child for a number of years and watch his highs and lows, his suicide attempts before even reaching age 11 and you seek and find answers.  You also seek and find the medications which will save his life from suicide.

There are people somewhere on earth who would disagree with any diagnosis you may pull from a hat...physical, emotional, or mental.  People do not agree on everything, but people should seek paths that work for them.

Point, people must agree to disagree and do so politely, not judgementally.

BTW, I know how to spell "judgmentally" but I could not figure out how to edit my reply.

Re: ADHD

I agree with your statement.  I too am a mother who has a child who was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age.  Later on, I found he was misdiagnosed and his the medication prescribed made it worse.  He too attempted suicide and it was then that I found out he was Bipolar NOS, a diagnosis I had never heard of.

The only people that can understand the hardship of having a child with ADHD or any other disorder cannot fully comprehend the difficulty parents face.

Looking for a middle ground

Thank you Shaky121 - my son is 20 and has been on dexamphetamines for 4 years.  I fought it for 16 years before I took him to a doctor and told him to do whatever tests he had to, but find out what is happening with my son and help me help him.

He did not do anything dangerous, such as lighting fires and he was not agressive, but his ability to concentrate and focus was -0.  We saw a vast improvement in his school work and the standard of work that he presented after he started on his meds.  He does not want to stay on them forever, but he doesn't want to be the way he was either, so we are talking about alternatives.

I was neutral on the whole idea of AD/HD, it was the whole concept of mind altering drugs that I was against.  He is two people - when he is not taking them he is who he is - he is funny and interactive, he chats to us and joins in on things we are doing, but his mind is a myriad of thoughts and ideas that seemingly go nowhere - as he put it, several jigsaws all mixed up without any pictures to help.  When he is on his meds, he is verbally agressive, because he is so focussed on whatever he is doing and he gets frustrated when distracted.

What we want is a middle ground - and together we will keep looking

good one kev
You always have the wowsers that like to tout there is no such disorder.I say again and again please non believers keep your short sighted opinions to your selves.Yes Yes I know we are entitled to our own opinion, however if it is going to hurt or upset others a little common decency is in order I feel there for keeping our opinions to ourselves in these instances would be the nicer thing to do.Well done Kevin on offering your experience and advice to those who really need it GOOD ONE.regards Merle

Kids With A.D.H.D.
I just want to comment if i may....and i mean no offence to either the for's or against's
My son doesnt have adhd..... but he is autistic......

I have gone 5 yrs without medicating him..... and only had too as his school was going to have him suspended in kindi......We tried anti-deppressents and others and finally we had to go on ritalin..... I dont like him being on drugs but without it he is violent, chucking his sis down the stairs, has set fire to teddys in his room..... and beats kids up......The school wouldn't have him there without meds.....

master 5  is not 100% but we have seen a 50% improvements..... I respect those who chose to go the drug free route and hope to get there one day soon... But i also respect those who have to put their childrens education b4 anything else.... I belive everyone is entitled to an opinion wether for or against......

I dont tell others that my son is medicated as i feel people judge harshly and often tell me i am a bad parent...... I just wanted to say that i understand both sides and sometimes Life gives us as parents no choice.....If my son was hurting one of your kids and i could stop it with medications what would you prefer me to do?

Hi Kevin,

I think you have done the right thing by making yourself available to discuss ADHD.  Parents newly facing this disorder do need other knowledgeable parents to discuss their issues with.

The average parent has no concept of how a true ADHD child behaves.  It's just outside
their experience.

I've seen how hard it is for both the child and the parent to deal with the problem.  As most parents want what is best for their child, I realise it must have been a hard decision to accept medication when your boy was so young.  I sure you helped turn his life around. ADHD makes life extremely hard for the child, not just the people around them.  Most children with ADHD find it impossible to control their impulses, they're not being naughty.
Children with ADHD who don't have help and support, experience rejection and become angry and rebellious.

No one questions a child with 'Turrets syndrome' having medicine to help control their problems.  But I view ADHD as a similar problem.

You do encounter some children who suffer from poor parenting and are mis-diagnosed.
But a true ADHD child is as unhappy with their disorder as everyone else is with their behavour.

I believe children with ADHD and their parents need all the support they can get.  It is not an easy life.

Hi Shazz,

From the research i've done i (and many other professionals)don't believe there is such a thing as a "true" ADD/ADHD child.

Kevin is wrong. ADD/ADHD cannot be detected by a chemical differance in the brain or anywhere else.In fact there is no medical test to diagnose ADD/adhd.

Get the FACTS that the pro ADD/ADHD people (including Professionals like doctors) won't tell you check out the following websites.

I hope Kevin checks them out too so his grandchildren don't end up on drugs.
