What if your son / daughter gets lost?

singlemum23 by singlemum23 Speaking(October 2006) (rank 500+)

I have started making little ID cards for kids. My biggest fear is going to the mall and losing my toddler. She can be such a wanderer. So I have devised a plan - I have created an ID card for her - she has been taught that if she

gets lost and cannot see mummy then she is to stop - go to the shop that is really close to her and give them her ID card - which has my mobile number on it. Saves so much time - all the shop assistant has to do is call me an I will come get her. Great for theme parks - kids are always wandering.

So it has started to become a mini business - people from my preschool are just rapped about the cards i make and word is fast getting around. All they have done is send me their details and a recent clear photo - the annual school / preschool photos are always great!

I have a number of different formats and colours - it is best not to make them too tricky as we just want them to serve a purpose and not become something that kids take out of their pockets - show their friends and lose them! when we go out - If alina has an available pocket - then in it goes - if not it hangs around her neck (loosely) under her clothes.

Below is an example!

If you are interested - let me know and I'll send you the details.

lost kids
If any one has been to Toowoomba's grand central they will know what im talking about. I lost my daughter there. I stopped at a ATM on my way to get photo's taken. Continued on my way talking to the kids walked into myers got near were photos were being taken and turned around and my youngest was missing. My heart jumped out of my chest i ran asking every single person if they had seen her to no avail.  I ran in the direction i came looking every direction to see my daughter walking with 2 security guards i ran my heart out. Ran up to her put my arms around her because she was crying. And to this day a few yrs later she will not go any were if she cant see me when there is a crowd. Lets just say the phot's were taken and they were not with us all smiling cos i couldnt get  her to smile. It was the most frighten thing in my whole life and never want to go through that again. She was to younge to remember phone numbers or addresses at the time. But know i have tought both my kids there address and phone numbers in case it was to ever happen again

good idea

i lost my daughter at an outdoor event when she was younger it was horrible. Thankfully she was found safe and well. Your idea is great my concern though is that the child loses the id card.  I think it would be great if you were able to attach the lables to their clothing somehow such as an iron on transfer. What do u think?

Great idea
I wish I had thought of something like that before I lost my daughter in the shopping centre it was one of the worst times of my life I have never been so terrified. So many thoughts go through your head and none of them are good. So I think it is an excellent idea for id tags.

from advice I wrote earlier

I wrote the following advice entitled "Paranoid Parenting" and thought I would add it here ... I love your idea of ID cards ! I wrote the following advice not knowing really what my intentions were .... but your listing helped me realize that I was not being paranoid but practical ... in these times .... Read the following :

God bless us all that nothing ever happens to any of our babies !

However, I watch those CSI television shows (crime scene investigation) and may be reacting with paranoia .... but here goes ...

I have not done all of these things yet, but I think I will ... In case my baby ever gets lost or abducted :

Have an item that smells like your child ... like a blanket or stuffed animal (so trained dogs can smell out a trail)

Have a recent photo (My boy is one year old and I take a photo once a month for his scrapbook)

Have something with DNA .... A toothbrush your child has used, a hairbrush with baby's hair, a band aide from a scrape with blood, a lock of baby's hair ...

Fingerprints (there is a kit for children's identification "I.D." offered in USA ...)

There are probably more suggestions ... I just do not know ...

We live in a scary world .... I offer this advice with the best of intentions .... that no one will ever have to put this information to use .... I keep an eagle eye on my boy when we are out and about .... but predators are tricky ....

If I have scared you a little, that may be a good thing in the end ..... Safe wishes to us all .... Lisa

What an Excelent Idea
This would be great for a number of situations. Even when Dad is late picking up his boy from school he can hand it to the office and give me a hurryup .

Do you even need the photo??
Just occured to me, that all you need is the childs name, Parents name and the phone number.  It;'s attached to the kid, you don't really need a photo, or if you had a photo would it not be better to have one of the mother, so they know the correct person is collecting them????

Do you even need the photo??
I really hate to say this but I will anyway... I think a photo is a good idea.... I always carry my licence with me or any ID photo information no matter where I go, for one reason and one reason only... In the hopes that I can't be identified by normal means, they have a photo of me right there with my details....Should anything really drastic happen to me...

Excellent idea
Great idea, I will make them for my daughter (when she's walking) and all my friends kids too.  Awsome.  I might punch a hole through it and then it can be attached to them via a dummy/pacifier keeper.  There you go, grab some cheapies and whack an extra $5- onto your little busness venture.

lost cards
I love this idea! Thank you for sharing. I have a toddler as well, and though he is too young yet... I will definitely make him one as he is a runner. And a soon as he can start talking, I will teach him who to approach and to give the card when he gets lost.

Brilliant Idea...

This is a fantastic Idea, and yes it will be a great time saver....  And you can be reuntied with the kiddies so fast, and your children can talk to you so they know you are coming to get them...

I'll be making my cards as soon as the little fellow can understand what they are, before then he is in the pusher....

Been very tempted
I've often been tempted to buy one of those as both of my boys do, what we like to call, the "death roll".  You know how they drop themselves to the ground and then roll until you have to let go of their hands.  Then they run.  As fast as they can.  In any direction.  We have been very blessed that they haven't ever been hit by a car or something else quite as terrible.  My 2 y/o even gets out of the straps in the pram.

I tried one of those strap things that my sister had, that you were talking about, but they somehow managed to get them off!!  Don't know how.  Must have the next Houdini or something.

Another usful item is

well I dont remeber what it is called but they have it at baby shops and the chemist here

my mother inlaw used it with her daughter

It is like a leash but it wraps around their wrist so they cant run of when your shopping or going for a walk it was expecialy good for her as she had a terrible habbit of bolting soon as she got a chance and the first place she would run was the road.

Wow, great idea
I will do that for my daughter. She loves to run off sometimes ahead of us in Shopping malls, but alot of the shop owners or the workers, and cleaners know who my daughter is and if she get's lost, they'll know we aren't far behind, and know who she belongs too.
