Check-up Tips

Check-up Tips

Here are some things to think about before taking your kids to the doctor.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS:  Let your child know that Doctors and Nurses are there to help you feel better and to keep you healthy and strong.

INFORMATION:  Explain to your child

that sometimes they will go to the doctor even when they feel ok, because regular check-ups help them stay health.Explain to them what may go on in the doctors office, like checking they weight height heart stuff like that.

HONESTY: be honest with your child about what tehy should expect even if it means that you have to tell them that they are going to have a needle.  Just tell them that " it may sting, but only for a bit".

MAKE BELIEVE: Prepare you child by getting yourself a childrens doctor kit so you can pretend to be a doctor or nurse.  Grab your childs favorite teddy or dolly and examine the ears, eyes and mouth.  Let the child  have a go at it.

PRACTICE: Help your child listen to your heart by hugging them close and placing there ears on your chest.

doctors are fun

I totally agree with you. We can't make them scared of going to the doctors as they're there to help you.

You got it absolutely right.  If you do all of these things then there should never be a problem.

Sounds good..

Do you have any advice for 17 month olds that scream the moment the doc touches them... I can't work it out.. at 6 months he needed a chest ex-ray and it took three of us to hold him still.... Same for when he was last getting his ears checked.. The only thing he sits still for are his needles.. I have no Idea why....

I am sure it is just the age and you cant really do much.  My son Austin is just starting to like the doctor himself.  He was excited the other day when I told him we were going to see the doctor.  It may be harder now with the doctor and your son becasue you guys had to hold him down.  You will just have to wait and see when the next time comes.  Do you have a good doctor.  I have had a doctor once that got upset becaue my newborn old ripped his glasses off his face.  Lets justs say we never returned to that doctor.  We have a really good doctor right now who talks with Austin and gives him toung sticks and he draws happy faces on it so that helps.  I can only say is keep them comfortable when they are there.  They cry and scream and try to get away becaus they cant really use there words.

We have a wonderful doctor she is fantastic... But it does not matter where we go, even if I take the dog to the vet... He sees a white coat and he knows what is going on.. I am hoping it is just an age thing as well because I don't think I could take to much more of this... :)  I dread taking him to the doctors. :)

Thank you...

Right on the facts

I am honest with my kids too.   We love our Dr. Although I have to find a new one as ours will be retiring soon.    It's so hard to find a good doctor too. I have known our Dr every since  I was like 12. He delivered 2 of my kids.

I know...we had a really good doctor when we lived in Victoria then we moved to Calgary.  We found a really good doctor here to so we are lucky.

How many times

I have heard parents threaten there child with a " if you don't behave I'll take you to the doctors/dentist and get them to give you a needle"!

My kids love our G.P. He is one of their best friends. And we are always honest with them.
