If your child wakes from a nightmare

Marlena by Marlena Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 12th)

1.  Reasure them with a hug.

2.  Tell them that the bad dream was a story they made up in there head.

3.Dont force them to talk about it if they dont want to, because this could upset them again.

4.Turn on the light for a

bit so they can relize that everyting in there room is the same as it waas when they went to bed.

5.Try to take there minds off the dream, try talking about something cheerful.

6. Stay with them until they start to fall back asleep, thell them where you will be beofre leaving.

7. If all else fails take your child into bed with you.

In the morning talk to them about there dream and tehn you can try to make sence of the dream and why they are dreaming it.

Nightmares!
Not had the experience of Amy waking up with nightmares but I certainly will keep your advice in mind when it does happen.

i talk to my lil girl if i think she's had a nightmare, and also don't force her to talk about it, but generally she tells me and she feels better once she's done so, but all children are different. Great advice given. well done

Yeah thanks.  I total understand that all children are differnt, that is one of my main things I always tell people.  It is total cool that a child wants to talk about there nightmares when it happends, I just would forc ethem to talk about it.  Thanks again.

I am so glad this is what you do.  It is what we do.  And because E likes to talk things through we often get to the bottom of it within about a week.  (sometimes she doesnt talk about it immediately).  It is good to know others do similar.
