Baby Talk

peachynowamum by peachynowamum Talking Back(October 2006) (rank 24th)

Don't get offended anyone but one of my pet hates is baby talk... Therei s no need for it!!!

It only slows their speach developement and vocabulary down... I would rather my daughter say thankyou or thanks instead of ta, food istead of numnums and bottle instead of botbot

as my grandfather called it.

I konw baby tallk sounds cute when babies do it and thats ok cause they are still learning how to talk but when an adult does it they are just slowing the process down as the child then continues to think that this is how everyone talks.

I also still agree that is the parents decision what they do but take into consideration what you are teaching your child as children learn by example!!!

Re: Baby Talk
Well someone disagreed, they voted everyone down... However they obviously didn't feel confident enough to talk about it

Anyway, I agree, I made it quite clear from when Jay was minutes old that it was an unacceptable, ridiculous way to communicate.  We have always signed to Jay as well - it means he looks at us when we speak, and from about 5months old, he was telling us if he wanted a drink - no waiting for tears.  He is quite good at talking, however usually he learns to sign a word first, then drops the sign when he is confident saying it.  I think having the extra communication tool has helped him to be such a laid back happy wee chappy.

NO baby talk

I agree once again with your article. I've always taught my daughter to say bottle, food, cat, dog, train etc. I think also it does slow their vocabulary down if you talk baby talk.

baby talk
i'm definately not offended. i dislike talking baby talk too and totally agree that there should be one language, and that is adult talk. I've always taught my child to talk the way we do, and not things like choo choo train or doggie, horsie etc, if they can say choo choo train , they can say train, or dog etc. It does slow their speech down. i totally agree.

I Agree
Baby talk is something that totally annoys here as well.  SO much so that teletubbies was never played on our TV.   Each to their own but baby talk was never used under my roof.

I totally agree
E has a wide range of vocabulary and she speaks clearly and in context.  People say it is because we never did baby talk with her.  True or false I dont know.  But she knows a lot of words well.
Peace
