Good age to travel

We recently travelled to the US for 5 weeks. We flew from Australia and landed in LA after over 24 hours in transit. Codi was just about to turn 11 months at the start of the trip and had his first birthday the day we flew back to Australia.

I

am glad that we did this trip when we did, as he was just experimenting with walking. If we tried to travel with him now I am sure we would have a real battle on our hands. He is such a proficient walker/runner now that he does not like sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time. I can just imagine the 14 hour flight from Hong Kong to LA!!!

He was very patient whilst travelling in Cars, Buses and Airplanes.

So my advice in a nut shell is, if you are thinking of travelling overseas/interstate, then I would recommend you do it before your child becomes proficient with walking.

Note: I am sure there is a stage later too once they become a little more patient again, and get sick of walking?

Cody sure will be havine some great times and considering how young he is and how many things hes been able to experience,he will be an old hand at any holidaying in the future.I think hes been more places than me!!!.Have a great time and remember the precious moments youve had together as a family

No choice

I think for many of us we dont have a choice when we travel with little ones per se. It is for a birthday, or christmas with family as opposed to luxury. I would consider that if you are going to travel with children and it isnt 'necessary' to go a 'long' distance than make the most of the short flights, or car trips and leave the flights until

child is old enough to appreciate flying as much as
the destination you are heading to
and finally can understand the importance of sitting still and occupying themselves with inflight movie or something.

*clink clink* That is just my 2 cents worth as I stated above, there isnt always a choice.

It Gets Easier

The girls have each traveled a lot since early on. Two were born in Australia and flew home to the States as newborns (around 2 to 4 weeks old). All three have driven across country and long trips in teh car have been a large part of their life. I honestly have never had a problem either when traveling in a car or on a plane. I do plan ahead though and go equiped with books, LeapPads, small toys (such as Polly Pockets, minature cars etc), crayons and coloring pencils. Always smart to have snacks on hand as well. With young ones and the frequent potty stops I had to be creative because for a time we lived in teh desert literally in the middle of nowhere. We took to carrying a potty chair in the back of the truck and it solved EVERYTHING. THe more they do it the easier it gets that is for sure.

Experience Wins

We started travelling with our daughter very early, and by the time she was walking she was a seasoned pro. Our experience was that, if they are familiar with travel, they are more likely to be patient. That doesn't mean you don't spend your share of the flight walking up and down the aisles, but It does mean that you are less likely to get those hard stares from the passenger across the aisle.

Babies love a captured audience

I agree wholeheartedly! I just travelled ALONE with my 5 month old to the states this meant a 9 hour flight with a 2 hour layover and a 1 hour connection. She was absolutely perfect the entire time. It really was the perfect environment for her. Where else would she have my complete, undivided attention for 9 hours straight? Not to mention all the smiles and attention from fellow passengers.

But I guess the inability to walk and explore would make the process of sitting still for 14 hours far more acceptable.

Yes - especially when they are at the stage where they can't even roll over! This is when they are a lot more patient. I think that would be a dream stage to travel.
