Themed days

JadieLady by JadieLady Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 17th)

THe past few weeks we noticed that Liam has been obsessed with 'treasures'. Mainly the gold looking hinges on all the doors. and we made hima  pirate hat because he had a pirate outfit (not like dressup or anything, just pirat epictures)

We have now decided it would

be really fun to make a tradition about having themed days.

for us it will be basically once a month at the moment, but we will change it to the beginning and end of term when LIam gets older. BUt you can have them as often or not often as you like! We are considering theme week for easter and christmas time, and are currently talking about whether it is one theme for the whole week, or a different one eacxh day. either way its bound ot be fun!

This is how we are doing it

The whole family dresses up in the theme,

We play themed games (treasure hunt anyone?) most normal games can be varied and  have the names changed for this,  Maybe the person who wins the most games gets to choose the next theme,

pick out themed names for ourselves,

have a costume parade, (maybe the winner picks the next theme day?)

eat themed food and so on.

Maybe you can organise the person who did this gets to pick the next theme, this person can organise different games to be played, this person can work on recipes, this perso can research or something. its really up to what works and suits you and your family :)

When the children are older you can also do research about famous people and events or just some silly facts about that theme, so it is educational as well.

we were all pirates the other day, (my name was Swashy Rose- i dont know why though! :)  )   and had a picnic in the park followed by treasure hunts and 'sword fights' which was really who could draw the est picture of a sword fight in the sand haha.

Everyone around at the park must have thought we were nuts, but other kid wanted to join us, and we had the greatest time. I only wish the camera battery hadnt died soon after arriving. none of the pictures i took worked out because of lighting issues :( maybe some from our next theme day :)

You can even let kids take turns in choosing the  themes!

Some ideas are:

  • Cowboy,
  • pirate,
  • disney,
  •  things the colour red,
  • superhero,
  • favourite celebrity(for older kids),
  • favourite movie (or you pick a certain movie as the theme where people have to dress up as characters from the same movie),
  • food.
  • the possibilities are only as limited as your and their imagination!

Some thoughts on when you can have theme days:

  • Beginning or end of school holidays (or both!)
  • CHristmas
  • Easter
  • birthdays
  • mother and fathers day
  • when having rellies visit (great photo opportunity there ;)  )
  • weekends
  • other public holidays
  • any time in between :)

Not only are theme days lots of fun for kids, they provide great family time, and some fantastic memories fr their adult lives, and who knows, htye might carry o nthis tradition when your a grandma or grandad :)   Your kids are garuanteed to love it, and so are you!

I know have to find out if there were any female characters in the thomas the tank series!!!

I like it
You went out in public dressed as a Pirate.....you brave girl you..  I have walked the streets dressed in full fairy Chele regailia many a time and the stares were never not embarrassing.  I think it sounds great but I think we might adapt it to the week of birthdays.  Birthday persons chooses the theme.

Thomas the tank...
There was a female engine called 'Rosie' on this mornings show.  She was pink and followed Thomas, and then rescued him.  Whew!  I knew there was a reason I watched it instead of changing the channel!!!
Love the idea of themed days.  We have done it in the past, but never structured it as such - now there is much more scope! Thank you
Peace
