I guess what I am really asking is "as someone who has tried different types of modern cloth
-what are your favourite types? (nappies, covers, liners etc)
-what are your favourite brands?
-Is there anything you would not recommend?
-What do I need to start with?
-Knowing what you know now what would you buy starting out?
I checked out the cloth bums group- and joined. thanks
In response to a wonderful minti member who is due to have a baby soon I have given some of my persoanal thoughts on using cloth and tried answering these questions.
I must point out that what works for me wont work for all. Keeping in mind that my bub is almost a year old what I prefer to use on him may not work as well on a newborn or an older toddler. I can't comment on those ages as I have only used mcn in the past few months. I think with my next bub I would use prefolds in the early weeks as there will be many changes! Velcro is also easier for most people just like a disposable. My bub takes it off though so not so easy now! One sized nappies are economical as you can use them early on - birth til toilet training.
My favourite nappies are side snapping fitteds with a hand knitted wool cover. Side snaps can be fiddly but give a trimmer fit and eliminate wing droop - this means a nappy hangs on the side if it is too big on the bub.
Erica nappies side snapping nappies as does
cutetooshies. Sorry these are in Australia. I know in the US and NZ they have some great makers also. It is now picking up in Australia where we are now becoming spoilt for choice. I also like BabyEco and BabyGreens and Totbots. They are also fitteds. I think the fave pocket is a Green Kids made by Sasha (a minti member )

As people might know from seeing my blog I like woollen covers that I knit myself. Also known as soakers. I also knit shorties and longies which double as clothing. I also like the Mother Ease Air Flow PUL cover as it has side snaps and fits well.
I use throw away liners in the nappies so its easy clean up and they can also be washed and reused again. I would like to use fleece liners which are easy to make - just buy some fleece from the fabric shop and cut , no sewing required as they don't fray.
Nappies I wouldn't recommend? This is just personal choice. I wouldn't bother with cheap nappies as you do pay for what you get. I say buy the best if you can afford. It will pay for itself quickly.
If I knew what I know now a few months back when I was starting to buy mcn I would have not bought nappies off ebay and I would have avoided what is popular. I bought the popular nappies and I am glad I didn't buy up big. I just bought trial packs and so that was ok. I have found my fave nappies aren't necessarily popular. I am quite happy with the nappies we have now and I feel that I have learnt a lot.
