DIY Christmas Decs

exquisite-flower by exquisite-flower Young Parent(October 2006) (rank 12th)

When we came to live in the UK we started 'doing' christmas.  Previously we had been with relatives for christmas, so never did anything in our own home.  Mum made a load of christmas decs to hang around the house.  Wreaths, streamers, christmas tree bits and bobs.

Long

green streamers were decorated every meter with red bows or clusters of gold sprayed thistles and other 'wooden' weeds that could be collected from the local countryside.  They were then hung up the banisters of the stairs, over the fire place or in other similar places.

Each year we made more decorations all in keeping with Mum's red and gold theme.

The main christmas tree decoration were these doves that she made out of card, covered in glitter and hung with gold ribbon. They had gold wings that were just gold paper fanned and then fed through a slit in the body shape.

We often went around the countryside and collected bits of weeds that were slightly 'stick like' or pine cones.  They would then be sprayed with gold spray paint and arrange them in clusters on wreaths, in other decorations and and just by themselves in a basket.

One year I made a table centrepiece at school in art class.  It was a tiered affair.  Each tier was made by a piece of cardboard, held up by a stick through the middle, filled with pieces of fir tree branches and decorated with little coloured flowers made out of tissue paper. (round circles scrunched up).

Sometime after I left home I had a piece of driftwood and someone said to me why not add some spray paint and dried flowers to it.  I did.  It was incredible, I also added a candle since it was appropraitely flat in one part and Mum used it for years.

Stained glass windows out of black card and different coloured cellophane are very effective and simple too.

It is easy to make stars, snowmen, snowscenes, snowflakes and so on to decorate bedrooms and christmas trees and the best thing is that all these things are relatively cheap to make and can be made to any colour scheme at all.

There are billions of things that are easy to make and not with much mess either.  I hope that you enjoy any creations yuo make.
Peace

Great Ideas!
well done I usually make a few new decorations each year to go on the tree or under it. I think thr easiest I ever made were tassle Angles and all you need for them are a few ready made tassles some wooden beads for the heads some wings and strings of little beads for the halo's and arms and you just glue them togeather and they already have the hanging cord attached so you can hang them straight away and they look great.

Christmas
I am not "crafty' in the least. i am looking forward to when my kids bring decorations that they made at school. Growing up, most of the decorations on the christmas tree were ones that me and my sisters had made at school. It made it more special to have homemade decorations.

this is a fantastic Idea

Not to mention Camille would love doing this....    We have been a bit slack on the making decorations as hubby and Camille as a surprise for me one day went out and spent heaps of money on decorations which looked fantastic when I got home...  I actually cried at the site of this beautiful tree.... But I  must say the year after the decorations did not seem as beautiful and both I and the hubby were dissapointed.. But as long as Camille was happy I was ok with that...   This year we won't have a christmas tree as we won't be here..   But next year, Camille, Francis and I are going to go wild.....

xmas decorations
now that my daughter is a bit older, we have started to make alot of things ourselves to decorate, like pine cones and doing alot of things by hand. We get commented on about it all the time on how much better it looks than the shop bought as they love to see hand make things especially made by my daughter.
