You’ve noticed your baby’s bottom has been red for a while and you’re starting to worry. Could your baby be allergic to her milk. Have you eaten something that could have been passed through your breast milk? Is a red baby bottom a big deal at all?
Below are some tips that can help you get to the bottom of red bottoms (pun intended here!):
- First, take your child to the doctor to have him examined for yeast infection. If it’s yeast infection, medication will help clear the rash. A sore and red bottom can be caused by yeast infection, which is a common occurrence among all babies.
- Now, if you know it’s not yeast infection, try cleaning the bottom with water. Dry it and leave her bottom exposed to air. Put your child to sleep on her tummy (under close supervision of course) so that air can circulate to her bottom.
- Use a good baby diaper rash ointment. Ointments with zinc oxide would go hand in hand with your baby in diapers. Do follow your doctor’s recommendation of cream.
- Bath your baby at least once a day and avoid using perfumed soaps (he could be allergic to perfumed soaps after all).
- Try the elimination diet if you suspect your child could be allergic to what he’s been eating or drinking. Eggs are a common allergy. Try changing formulas if you think the rashes could be caused by the current formula.
- Do not let a wet/soiled diaper hang in there for more than a couple of minutes. Change it as soon as you can, or else the red bottom could become worse.
- Perhaps your child is allergic to all forms of disposable diapers? Try using cloth diapers, and the rash may just disappear. Or use hypoallergenic diapers.
- Some babies don’t really get rid of their red bottoms or rash until they are potty trained, so do be patient and attempt those washing, ointments, and frequent diaper changing to minimize a sore butt.
