Making your own Baby food

Marlena by Marlena Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 20th)

When my son was at teh age to start eating baby food I decided to follow in my sisters foot steps and make my own baby food. At first I didn't know If I wanted to do it but then I said why not.  I thought it would take so much time but it was really quick and simple.  First you take a fruit steam it then puree it, adding water to make it thinner if needed.  Pour mixture into ice cube trays and freeze.  When tehy are frozen place in freezer bags and you are done.  It takes maybe one evening of your time to make a bunch of different kinds of fruit and veggies.  When you are ready to eat take the cubs and melt in microwave add your cereal to it and it is all done.  I think I had to make baby food twice for my son.  So it was cheap and easy.

Here are teh freezer storage times:

Fruit-6 months in the freezer

Vegetables-6 months in the freezer

Purees with milk-4-6 weeks in the freezer

Fish, red meat and chicken -10 weeks

My son really liked the chicken soup purees I made the best.  You can also mix them, like cauliflower and brocooli.  Remember when you are intreducing a food for the first tiem to give it to them at least 3 times before interducing another  so if they have an alergic reaction to something  you know what it is.

Ditto!
I didn't buy one jar of baby food.  We only purchased infant cereal, rice and then mixed grain.  I think we had one box of cereal and fruit, but didn't buy that again.  I loved making my own food.  It saved us so much money and it wasn't hard to do.  The only time it didn't work was when I pureed chicken.  When we warmed it up it was rubbery!  I still don't know how I messed it up.

Better for them
Another thing that I just remebered that I liked about it was I knew exactly what went in the baby food that he was eating.  Only natural sugars which is better for them.

So easy!
I did this.  And i agree, it sounds a big task when you get ready to do it, but it becomes so easy and if you have a hungry baby it is easy to go get another cube quickly also.  I found it invaluable
Peace
