Shisha and pregnancy: A gigantic NO |
 |
by surfingmama (November 2006) (rank 500+) |

One mum inquired if smoking shisha (or hookah) was ok while being pregnant. After all shisha is a water-pipe and you pop in herbal fruits (instead of tobacco). So I decided to do a little investigation on shisha and whether it’s ok to devour it while being pregnant. My
conclusion is this: Don’t smoke shisha (or smoke anything at all) if you’re pregnant. According to the
Wikipedia entry on shisha:
A review published in the medical journal Pediatrics found that the concentration of cancer-causing and addictive substances in water-pipes may be equal to those found in cigarettes, with the heat involved being sufficient to generate carcinogenic nitrosamines, and the smoldering charcoal adding some carcinogenic hydrocarbons as well as heavy metals to the smoke. Similarly, a study in the November 2005 issue of the Journal of Periodontology found that the impact of water pipe smoking is equivalent in magnitude to that of cigarette smoking.
Although without the tobacco component, shisha is worst than puffing cigarettes. So, pregnant ladies who are currently hooked on shisha, quit now.
