Op Shopping for fun and finance

cheleinkal by cheleinkal Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 20th)
Op-Shopping   It never ceases to amaze me that more people don't use the Opportunity Shops in their towns/suburbs.   They are simply a treasure trove of wonderful products,
I think of them as my very own Aladins Cave, and they have saved my family a fortune over the years.
Today for example, Ailish and I popped in prior to getting nappies at the supermarket and what did we find?????   A Fisher Price Activity Table in terrific condition, all I had to do was replace the batteries and give it a scrub with hot water and Domestos (I clean all oppy stuff this way)  and she has been playing with it now for 30 minutes and shows no signs of quitting.  How much did half hour of happy playing and free time for me cost me you may well ask??  Aust $5.00.  I KNOW!!!  How cheap is that, I would guestimate that to buy new in K-Mart or where ever would cost upwards of Aust $50- easily, so I am very happy in our great find.    That how ever is not all.    I have out fitted our daughter in designer babies wear and have even stashed some size 2, 3 and 4 stuff away for her for when the time comes that they may fit her.  I have also clothed many of my friends children because for some reason that I do not understand, THEY chose not to shop this way, but are extremely happy to receive my purchases on their behalf.  We have Osh-Kosh, Peter rabbit, Humphrey & Friends, Paddington, Pooh Bear and many more label and designer names.   Our Op-Shops here have $5- Bag Days.  This means you can stuff as many clothes as is humanly possible into a normal sized plastic grocery bag and all you pay is $5- for the entire bag full.  I always chose the most expensive or valuable things on these days .  In my last $5- bag I bought   4 X sized 1 baby sleep bags (which I needed as our daughter is growing out of her old ones), 2X tops for myself (size 16-18), 3 Xsize 4 designer skirts for A.J. 1X pair of size 2 groovy jeans with a glittery princess on the leg.   The secret is to roll the items as tightly as you can then put them into your bag   I bought both my change tables at Oppy's, a wooden one which I sanded and re-painted for $10.00 and one on wheels that includes a bath for $5-.   I have purchased bed linen for our bed, our guest bed and our daughters cot all from Op-shops. My ironing board is from there as well.  I have 2 great Mother Craft Nappy Bags in perfect condition from there.    And as I said, most of our toys are pre=loved op-shop toys.  We also have a HUGE selection of dress ups (snow white etc) all bagged and waiting in the shed for her to grow up and into   It is just incredible the amount of money you can save for yourself.  Along with that of course there is the knowledge that goes with knowing that every cent you spend is going to the charity for which the store is run.  Most items in each store have come from the Head Depot, which is usually found in the states capital city, and clothes in particular are dispersed in area's far away from their point of donation.   It is a win win situation if ever there was one.   Shop On!!!!!!

Re: Op Shopping for fun and finance

Just wondering but,

is it possible that you could make a table or something showing price comparisons between the item bought at an op shop and it sold at its original out let, like k-mart for example.      ??

thanks

Re: Op Shopping for fun and finance

Thanks, I love getting lots of books and stuff. I also like getting tupperware, pyrex etc for kitchen stuff - good quality stuff which costs the same as the dollar shop and will last much longer. A lot of our camping kitchen gear and the sandpit toys are op shop stuff.

I wanted to get a pure wool jumper for my man for when he goes fishing because the woll stays drier, but I didn't want to spend a fortune on something which was going to get worm guts all over it. Solution - $3 at the op shop.

The trick is to take what you like and leave the rest and be happy so sort though tubs to find what you want.

Great advice!

I have done this all my life also. I do it for my daughter too for when she goes to kindy. I think it's a great idea, and only way to live sometimes. Great article.

Party dresses
Here in the Uk if you live in a 'rich' area you will find nice stuff, else you may be stuck with some awful things!!!  We have found an amazing 'elite' op shop near where my parents live and we get all E's party dresses from there - they are in mint condition, worn only once probably, and never more than £5 GBP.
They are gorgeous!  If anyone in the UK wants her dresses when she has gorwn out of them mail me and i shall get a piccy so you can see what it looks like and I can send to you.
Peace

quality of goods/suburbs
I'm not sure if other charities do it, but I know the Salvation Army put donated items (especially clothes) in shops out of the area they were donated in, if possible. It helps to even out the quality (although some shops are still better than others) but also stops potential problems....imagine the following scenario: Child A has a unique hand-knitted jumper which is too small so it's donated to charity. Child B turns up at school 2 weeks later wearing said jumper. Child A recognises jumper, queue teasing & bullying of Child B because A knows where they got it from :-(

I love garage sales...
When Francis was born we picked up some great garage sale toys and equipment.. Nothing that a bit of dusting and disinfecting would not fix... As for the clothes my hubby is a funny one. I love going to op shops...  So i don't always tell him when I get him a new item of clothing where it comes from or unless he asks....  Although he hates to share shoes so I respect that... And don't buy shoes from the op shop... :)  But you can really find some cool stuff...

I need to do this more.
Thanks for the reminder.  I don't do this enough.

Dragging three kids along on browsing trips is sometimes overwhelming, so I don't do it enough.  If I would go without the pressure to find the thing I think I need and just browse, I'd have more fun.

My mom loves to take my kids to the local thrift shop and always buys them a cheap toy which keeps them fully entertained for the time they spend with her.  They always beg to go with her.

I used to take older kids (youngest was a 4 year old boy) and give them $2.00 they could spend any way they wanted to and let them search for their own treasure.  I could have a look keeping an eye on them as these shops are not overly large and they would invariably find me to get aproval on their choices prior to purchasing.  This made the shopping experience a pleasure for all and the kids were often GIVEN stuff from the volunteers who worked there as they were so polite and cute.

I need to do this more.
We go to our local (100 yds down the road) when i have spare change.  Only then, there are too many things to tempt us otherwise!!!  E always finds something she loves and it is cheap on my pocket, but has a lasting value for her.  And most things are costing me the coinage in the bottom of my purse, so it is spare change really.
