Breastfeeding day 3

TheLibrarian by TheLibrarian Talking(November 2006) (rank 187th)
Hello parents,

It's about day 3 since we've had our baby and milk production is steadily increasing. However, it seems like after each pump the breast is still swollen with lots of milk and the breast feels very hard. In such a case, should we keep expressing more milk
(more often or longer each time)? If so, wouldn't this stimulate the breast to produce more... which leads to more swelling? Also, what might help with this pain, we're using the cold cabbage technique now.

Any experience here would help thanks?

Hi!

The first thing I want to say is: don't worry too much unless you are really uncomfortable. If you relax it will help. (easy for you to say I hear you mutter :) )

The cabbage technique is good. Another technique is to use rose geranium essential oil (a few drops in a carrier such as olive oil - your midwife will know the correct ratio) and massage into the breasts (avoid the areaola and nipple) after each feed. I found this oil a wonderful help. And it smells a whole lot better than cabbages! Be aware, however, that both these methods reduce milk flow so should be used carefully and only when needed.

Perhaps try warming the breast with a warm (not hot) heatbag or warm facewasher before expressing. This seems to help the milk flow. But you are right. The more you express the more milk there will be. So perhaps only 'take the pressure off' and see how you feel.

Another thing to remember is this will pass. Eventually your baby will regulate the flow to where it should be. You are only on day three and you breasts will feel like lead weights for a couple of days and then you won't notice it.

Also, remember to talk to your midwife/doctor/childcare nurse. They are there to help.

Hope this helps you too.

Regards,

Jess.

Let it Flow

You're going to hate me but I never experienced engorgement though I did experience a cracked nipple and plugged duct on the same breast.  When it would hurt just too much to continue to nurse my daughter on that side I would put a warm compress on to keep the flow going, prop a bottle under the nipple, and just let it go so that I wasn't stimulating more production but I also wasn't allowing my breast to stay very full and it seemed to empty quite well going that route.  Best of luck to you!

Mastitis

Nice work. Oh boy I remember back to those days *grin* the swelling, the leaking, the cracked nipples - lovely ;-) I notice you brought up mastitis - yep thats a doozy too- dont let it go. However if you get it during the night like i did - put warm cloths on the swelling and express into a sink or something- keep massaging the area and expressing (it helped me a lot until I could get to the doctor- a friend who didnt bother doing anything until she could get to the dr was much much worse)

Relax is best
i agree. relaxing while pumping the breast for milk and breast feeding is the best thing to do.

swollen breast forgot to add
I forgot to add that if the breast develops lumps, as opposed to overall swelling get to your medical professional STRAIGHTAWAY! as it could be mastitis and you may need antibiotics. Better to be safe than sorry.
