Moving to the crib: How to make the transition just a little easier

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 58th)
We recently moved our son from his cozy (and now too small) bassinet to his crib and it's been really difficult for him. Does anyone have any advice on how to make this transition easier? Thanks in advance!

  • Put your child in the corner of the
    crib.
The bassinet is such a cozy place for a baby because there isn't a lot of open space around him.  Big areas can be frightening to a little baby.  By placing your child in the corner of the crib, you are simulating the security he felt in the bassinet.  If you have a crib bumper in the baby's crib that is safe, you won't need to worry about him rolling around and injuring himself on the crib rails.  He'll have a cushion that is not unlike the wall of your bassinet.
  • Swaddle your baby.  By tightly wrapping your baby in a blanket, you are providing him with a feeling that is similar to how he felt inside of you.  All that open space in the crib and all that room to flail around will take away your baby's sense of security.  Keeping him wrapped up can greatly reduce his fear and insecurities.
  • Turn the temperature up a notch.  With the walls around the bassinet being so close to your baby, there isn't much room for a breeze to blow through that may cool your baby off a little more than he would like.  Even with a bumper pad in a crib, there is plenty of wide open space that can be subject to a draft in your baby's room.  Sometimes it is just a little cooler in a crib and that may be uncomfortable to your baby.
These are just a few tips to help your baby transition into the crib.  They worked with my son and I hope they will help you.
