Fly away to Sleep, Kids!

Chrysalis by Chrysalis Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 50th)

With my boys all hyped and busy in the evenings (now we have daylight saving here in south east Australia and the nights are light and bright....) Ive been thinking of a facinating technique my dear Mum used to settle me. Now I dont know if she deliberately did it-

or if it was one of those chance little gems ...but id like to share it with you all and maybe it will help some.

I was very young and we had either seen on telly or a picture in a book a picture of a magician levitating someone above a tabletop or some such - you know the kind of image?

I was enthralled- I badly wanted to float in the air and asked Mum how to do it. And this is what she told me.....

  • It takes a lot of practice and some people can never do it- but ive heard that it is possible to learn how to levitate yourself.

  • You must lie quietly in bed - stretched out flat- hands at your sides

  • Breathe slowly and evenly "in and out...."

  • Then starting with your toes- then ankles then your whole foot- imagine it is VERY VERY heavy and is sinking down deep into the mattress. (it sounds odd but by imagining it is heavy you can actually cause the opposite effect.

  • very slowly work your way up your body- concentrating on each part and imagining it as very heavy and sinking down into the bed.....

  • your calves, knees, thighs, bottom, ; your whole legs.... back, hands, arms elbows, shoulders; your whole body...your neck and your head- imagine your face is heavy and it is dropping down towards the bed- pushing your head even further down.

  • DO NOT actually push down at all- you must be very still and very relaxed - you only imagine you are heavy and sinking.

Of course what this is is a marvellous relaxation technique and it is actually very common and widely used. I have no idea if anyone has actually levitated as a result of using it ;-) If I had been told to do it so i would relax and go to sleep I doubt i would have bothered - but to learn to LEVITATE- to float off the bed- to FLY..... I did it EVERY NIGHT!!!!!! ROFL.

Have fun! :-) x

Sounds great!
What a fun idea.  I can remember having to do this as a warm down after indoor PE as a kid.  Invariably I nearly fell asleep in my next class from being too relaxed....lol
Peace

I TOO have done similar! I tell my daughter to count sheep jumping over a fence. Sure enough she falls asleep soon. I would recommend this method to anyone, I may be onto something here.

My mum taught me a similar technique.

My mum taught me a similar technique. But the first part was to wiggle my toes and then work the whole way up my body wiggling and then relaxing each part as I went. At the end I was to imagine I was on a magic carpet floating away. I haven't done it recently but I do remember using this technique as an adult to get to sleep.

Great advice, thankyou for reminding me of it. It worked for me!

Oh nice one :-)
We used that one (the magic carpet) at a workshop I ran for women with depression - they flew on the magic carpet over the rainbow - using the colours to progressively relax
