Preventing pregnancy leg cramps

Preventing pregnancy leg cramps - take two Panadol

Up until this week I had managed to treat my pregnancy leg cramps by flexing my foot. I had trained myself not to point my toes in the morning when I stretched and to quickly flex my foot if I

felt a cramp starting.

Thursday night I got a cramp while driving, flexing my foot did not solve the problem (I am sure my little dance in the driveway to try to relieve the cramp was amusing to watch).

Friday morning I woke with leg cramps, if I flexed my foot I got a cramp in one part of my leg and if I pointed it I got a cramp in another. I just couldn’t win.

Luckily my husband remembered the midwives at the anti-natal class telling us to take two Panadol tablets to relieve leg cramp. It worked!

Later that afternoon about an hour before I had to start a 3 hour drive I got another cramp. I took two Panadol and did not get any more cramps. Getting leg cramps while driving at 110 kilometers an hour would not have been a laughing matter!

Update 9/11/06

In a comment below a member mentioned that her doctor had told her not to take Panadol. Today at my doctors visit I checked again about Panadol and was told that it was safe to take during pregnancy. The doctor said that it was very important to avoid anti-inflammitories such as neurofen etc. If you are in doubt, please check with your own doctor or pharmacist.

In another comment below a member mentioned magnesium and then I read in "up the duff" that calcium can also help cramps. I checked with my doctor today and was told that I could take both these supplements (most pregnancy formulations contain both of these supplements, unfortunately as I am having weekly iron injections I can't take oral iron so pregnancy supplements are out for me). If in any doubt please check with your doctor or pharmacist

Re: Preventing pregnancy leg cramps

Thanks for the advice. I remember the terrible cramps from the first time around, always in the middle of the night. I think I was told to take magnesium, I cant remember though.
Thanks for adding the extra bit on the bottom for extra info as well.

Leg Cramps
Wish I knew that during my pregnancy! My leg cramps mainly happened at night while I slept. If I drank a glass of milk before I went to bed then I didn't seem to get any, however that doesn't help when you are out and about.

Leg Cramps
I hadn't heard the milk tip, but I started drinking more milk towards the end of the pregnancy due to chipping a tooth (calcium levels) and heartburn. Now that I think about it I didn't get as many leg cramps. Thanks for adding that piece of advice. Cheers Kim

Also... Another way to help with leg cramps!

There is another way to help with leg cramps.. I had REAL bad leg cramps while I was pregnant with my daughter and what helped for me is to put your foot on a COLD floor and push down. It worked.... Trust me!!

Also... You are allowed to take Tylenol when you are pregnant, but only the regular strength!!! I was told that by doctors and used it only a few times through-out my pregnancy!!

EXCELLENT
WE were never told about the panadol.  How wonderful you have shared that advice and terrific that you yourself have found it to be sooooo relieving.

I shall file that piece of info away for future referance that's for sure as I just put up with it and foot flexed as I had no idea there was an alternative.

You are a gem.

leg cramps
I found lots of water really helped me. Even though it meant lots of getting up in the night! :) I still got them but it helped when they did strike.

hiya!

check first with your doctor if it's ok, but magnesium is usually the first line of defence with leg cramps & twitches. generally people are quite low on magnesium. if you aren't able to take magnesium supplements, then also check if it's ok to have epsom salt baths. epsom salts are really high in magnesium and in a bath, is absorbed thru the skin.

as i say, check with doc first to make sure it's safe, but that's usually the first thing that comes to mind when people mention leg cramps & twitches.

cheers!

Is it okay to take panadol. My doctor has said not to take it. Just wanted to see if other doctors have said otherwise

Panadol is ALL you are allowed to take.  You can't take asprin or aspro or nurophen or anything but panadol.  I'd ask your Dr. why he recommended you not take it.  If for example you get the flu and have a temp (happened to me) it far more dangerous to have a temp for the baby that it is top take 2 panadol and bring your temp down.

I'd ask again for sure if I were you, sounds weird to me.

My doctor said I could take it. I don't take it often but I felt it was safer than risking leg cramps while driving at 110km per hour. My husband is not allowed to drive for medical reasons and we live in a country town.
