Fruit and Veg; Made Very Simple

Chrysalis by Chrysalis Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 50th)

This is just a simple little thing that I learnt from watching a friend of mine who is a Mum of 4 and a Doctor (GP)

Kids tend to be hungry when they come home from school and from what ive observed with other families they often grab the

first thing that comes to hand when they arrive home (packet of chips, biscuit, lollies, slice of cake - if those things happen to be on hand ;-)

Before mine were at school I would sit chatting and watching her cut up a big platter of fruit for her brood. They would arrive home and there it would be sitting on the kitchen table- they would happily devour the lot and then (and only then) they were allowed a chocolate biscuit *grin* and then off they went to play.

I have adopted the same strategy and now that all three of mine are at school it really works well. (and i dont even bother with the biscuit ;-)

The trick is to have a wide range of fruits and veg and try and introduce little bits of new things here and there.

It also has to be nicely prepared so it is easy to grab and eat finger food.

Apples peeled cored and sliced- oranges in 1/8 ths - bananas in chunks or slices (they get a bit slimy but the kids love spearing them with toothpicks)- watermelon, honeydew and canteloupe in chunks or slices - strawberries sliced in half - fresh peas in open pods - capsicum cut into very thin strips - carrots in thin strips too. (my kids hate celery - but this is good in strips too). You can also add dried fruits- pineapple, apricots, sultanas, and nuts (personally i serve these AFTER the fresh fruit is gone, with salada biscuits and cheese)

As I said - its a very simple trick- but its the timing which makes it so effective- I also often pull the same stunt first thing in the morning - when the kids come through there is some fresh fruit all prepared and cut up (sometimes just a couple of thinly sliced apples) sitting on the coffee table in the lounge that they can pick at it as they get dressed and before 'real' breakfast.

Enjoy :-)

Banana and apples....
I can't believe that Banana's have become so expencive in Australia! I guess my poor son will have to go with out when we get there.. But I am very thankful that inclued in his first words are banan et pomme.. (banana and apple) when he gets hungry I just cut them up for him, and now he loves peaches, still working on that word....   I will admit that he gets the odd chocolate cookie maybe even little bit to much. I try not to give it to him though because I am sooo sure the husband sneaks him a  few every now and then...  That is probably why at the moment his favorite word is cookie....

prepared fruit
Fruit that is cut up and ready to eat is always around in our house. Excellent advice. Especially as kids get older. Eating on the run can be healthy if snacks are prepared before hand.

eating healthy.
My daughter rarely eats junk food, as i've done the same thing where i've always prepared healthy food for her like veggies and fruit etc and that's all she know's mainly, and when she's been a good girl, she does get the odd lollies, chocolate biscuit etc. Mainly she eats healthy....

Ahhh your entry has made me dream of days gone by - remember the lovely fruit, banana? How I miss it!! I used to have banana all the time, with everything.

Not banana sandwiches though. Bread is difficult for me personally, as I must have saltless bread.  Supermarket bread has far too much salt in it  I bake my own with no salt (my menieres disease) and exercise, and attend a yoga class once a week.

Everyone feels better after a healthy snack
I'm a huge fan of cake, but who needs the sugar?  Yesterday we had grapes and apples and my son couldn't have been happier.  Great ideas.

That's the way it goes here!
If it's there they will eat it. LOL.   I like doing up a cracker, meat and cheese plate.  Especially when we have Guides or soccer that evening.

Good habit
I believe all eating habit of our children is starting from us, the parent. If we could introduce and keep giving good and healthy routines, I'm sure the children will adapt the same way too. I always prefers fresh or dried fruits as the first option of snacking. Biscuits are  only the treats....or if I'm so lazy. Specially come summer time, fresh cold fruits from the fridge are really nice to cool the heat.

lol@lazy

we all have those times ;-).

Our youngest actually prefers fruit to lollies and cake and eats very little of the 'treat' foods at birthday parties, also his drink of choice is water. Tonight he refused to eat dinner (chicken kebabs and macaroni cheese - usually a favourite) and insisted on eating two large peeled cored and sliced apples - why argue ;-)
