My son amongst other issues is very hyperactive and is considered ADHD. I went down the usual avenues and in desperation looked at what he was eating. I was very shocked to learn that what he was eating/drinking was a huge part of the problem. He had allergies to MSG, 635 a flavour enhancer (apparantly Australia is the only country that uses this flavour enhancer?) 160b a natural colouring and peanut butter. His behaviour changed dramatically within 4 days of removing these things from his diet. The hyper behaviour that was left we dealt with by channeling it into something positive. I bought him some second hand games (cause its cheaper) and a packet of cards and he has his books. When he is hyper I suggest a game or a story and he is amazing he will build cities of lego (and I mean cities) use cardboard glue etc and make amazing things like an aquarium. Some days are still a struggle but so far we are managing without medication. (I know sometimes this cannot be done). My son less than 2 years ago was stuttering and had a severe motor tic was so traumatised from our accident that his hyperactivity and night mares became intorerable. The Change of diet, channeling of his amazing energy into postive things, and loads of love and support mean today he is a confident, loving little man.
The best help I had was from a site called www.fedup.com.au run by Sue Dengate an allergist. Don;t get my wrong I also, saw a professor of allergies, a child psych and a sandtray therapist and 2 paedricians but the biggest plus was from diet change.
Hope this helps someone. 2 years ago I was afraid of my almost 4 year old's aggression and impulsive behaviour, now I can enjoy him - it took a lot of work and its demanding but its working at least for now.
Cheers

PS apparantly a sign of allergies is the dark rings under the eyes, that look of exhaustion even when you sleep, the allergies shane had were causing that, headaches, cold symptoms, breathing probs, hives and hyperacitivity. The picture shows the black eyes
