Family Friendly Fridge

Prinea by Prinea Talking(November 2006) (rank 500+)

Unfortunately as most refridgerators are set up fruits and veggies get banished to the bottom most limits, those two or three out-of-sight-out-of-mind drawers down below. Also unfortunately, kids and adults alike have the tendancy to grab and go when they are hungry for a snack or quick meal, whatever is

right in front of them and most easily accessible is more often than not what gets consumed. To ensure what you're family is grabbing and going with is healthy can be simple. Rearrange your fridge so that your drawers are used to house the less healthy things you're storing (we use one for meat and cheeses, one for bread products (bagels, tortillas, etc) and one for sour cream, cottage cheese, etc.) and your fruits, veggies, and other quick healthy snacks are kept on the shelves at eye-level.

Bonus tip: Rearrange your pantry in the same manner. Keep chips, cookies, candies, etc on the highest shelves while pretzels, nuts, dried fruits, etc are kept on the eye-level ones in single serving sized containers.

Great idea
I think it is a great idea and when I get my own place again I will do that.  But isn't the drawers ment to keep the fruits and veggies fresher and last longer?

Yep and it is at the bottom because there and at the back of the fridge are the coolest places to keep things fresher.. Mine has an extra meat bucket at the bottom as well...

Totally works for us.  E loves helping herself from 'her shelf'  and she will often bring me something as well.  It isnt actually her shelf.  but it is the one she is allowed to help herself from if there is any reason that she is going in there and I am not.  It does not happen in any other home and she accepts that it is only our fridge that she can raid on occasion.  She is very good about it really.
Peace

Jess is correct, in older fridges the bottom is supposed to be the coolest so they put the drawers there to help keep foods prone to spoiling fresher longer. In newer fridges many even have their own seperate climate controls for the drawers themselves.

I don't know how long you try to keep fruits and veggies, though, but like I said before I have never had something go bad simply because it was stored on the fridge shelf rather than in the drawer, buy quality produce from a reputable grocer or farm market and it should keep just fine until your family has a chance to eat it. :)

Fruit and veggies...

I keep my fruit in the bottom of my fridge as it is colder and fresher there, but I also have a fruit bowl... The fruit bowl does not stay full long so I just keep topping it up...

As for the snacks.. Well they are out of reach... Yep even mine.. LOL I call this the hubby cubby... As well the treats are his, he has the biggest sweet tooth I have ever seen, and he is still oh so thin... Lord knows how he does it.

Fruit and veggies...

LOL! My hubby is the same way, he out eats me times ten and is so thin. I'd like his metabolism for just a day! LOL!

As for the fruit and veggie keeping, I used to store mine in their respective drawers, my fridge is only three years old so it has wonderful effective temperature and humidity controls, and when I switched to this method I can't say as though there has been any noticeable difference in their crispness, freshness, or in how long they keep - although this would obviously vary depending on the fridge and it's settings and of course your climate. Older fridges are less reliable in their temperature and humidty regularity to begin with though so that's always something to keep in mind. I honestly can't remember the last time I had something go bad and I only shop once weekly at the most as we live an hour from town. I have it pretty down pat now how much I need to buy for any particular amount of time, I plan ahead buy what I'll need and store it as I mentioned above, by the time I'm ready to shop again we're usually down to one or two pieces of fresh fruit.

Thanks!

Me too! Have you figured out how to forget where you put it yet? I can lose my keys day in and day out but I've yet to lose the chocolate - even when I try!

i think this is good advice
i've found that if I put carefully washed fruit and snackable veggies at eye level, the kids do tend to eat them much faster.  good reminder.
