Naming Days

selly by selly Talking(November 2006) (rank 132nd)

Naming days are wonderful days to have.

I chose to have a naming day because of my belief.
I'm hoping when my child is old enough she can choose which path is right for her.

The day starts with warm welcome from the celebrant, then a speech

from the parents and the godparents.
After the speeches the parents, grandparents and godparent sign a certificate.

Then we eat and party. We have cake and music. The whole family is there. Its like a mini-birthday party.

My daughter was 6 months at the time of her naming day. But any age is fine. I had a special candle made for the day. Its always nice to have a keepsake.

So if christenings aren't your cuppa tea, try a naming day. Its basicially the same, but without christian contents.

How about trying out my new group:

Multi cultural
I think this is an awesome idea regardless of religious beliefs or affiliations.  It opens the day up to all friends and family including those who have different beliefs to yourself, and everyone can come and celebrate the joy of life without feeling discomfort at some 'ritual' that they may not agree with or simply not understand.
Peace

Multi Religion
That was one of my reasons for having a naming day. My aunty, which i am very close to is a go-to-church-every-sunday Christain, and being a pagan...well i didn't wont to offend her. So the naming day had no religious aspects. It was just a day to celebrate my daughter and to welcome her.

naming days!

hiya!

we had a naming day for our daughter, after a more traditional catholic baptism for our son.
i still wanted her to have a baptism certificate, and luckily we were friends with a minister who would perform the cermony, and integrate it with our more "relaxed" ceremony. we held it in the park, on a beautiful april day.
only a few close friends & family were there (my dad was outraged & so my parents didn't come)...
we followed some wiccan traditions - a candle ceremony, that kind of thing.
afterwards we had a photographer friend take some happy snaps of our daughter (she was 14 months old at the time) - and they were just beautiful. we had a picnic in the park, and let her run free. my favourite picture was towards the end of the day, when her special dress was off (she was a nudie kid LOL), and just had her nappy on, and i was swinging her by the hands - the photo captures her laughing & looking completely free...

it was a very special day!
so yar - good idea - and if there are family-religious conflicts, it's an option and compromise that not everyone things of!

Wonderful idea
This is also a great compromise for a family that cannot necessarily agree on whether to follow the mom's or the dad's religious traditions.
