Christmas Traditions

Firefly by Firefly Talking(November 2006) (rank 121st)
I love Christmas traditions.  There is just not enough time over Christmas to fit all the traditions in.  There are a few we've tried out over the years and some that have stuck as tried and true traditions and others we've said good-bye to.  The following are a few
of my favorites.

Caroling - Every December we get together with a group of friends and go caroling.  The group consists of families, singles, couples.  A great mixture.  Each family unit picks two places they'd like to go carolling.  We pack into cars and vans whatever way we fit.  We bring along jingle bells and other percussion instruments.  We usually meet before we go carolling for a potluck supper and then after carolling for Christmas goodies and hot apple cider.  Not only is this a fun activity for all of us, but it's also doing something kind for others in our community.  My kids talk about this all year.  In March they're asking, "When are we going carolling again?"

Christmas Sleepover - We all sleep under (actually it's beside) the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.  We drag blankets and matresses and all cuddle up together to enjoy the Christmas lights and wait for Santa and Christmas morning to arrive.  It's a great way to build family togetherness and excitement.

Christmas Movies - I always pack away our Christmas movies and only allow them to be watched during the Christmas season.  Our family favorites are Polar Express, The Grinch, and Sound of Music.  I'd like to introduce one more 'oldie', but not sure which one.  Any suggestions?

We watch these as a family with popcorn, Christmas goodies and lots of snuggles.

Christmas Baking
- On the day I do my Christmas baking I pull the kids out of school (my husband and I are both teachers and it's okay for your kids to skip school for some important family bonding).  My mom joins us and we bake all day.  I run out to pick up a special take out lunch that day.  When the baking is done we arrange some on paper plates to give to friends and neighbours, and the rest we arrange on platters and freeze for Christmas gatherings that I'm asked to bring treats to.  We also make up a little box the kids can bring to their teacher the next day.

Christmas Eve Caroling
- This is my favorite tradition.  On Christmas Eve our family goes to a local church's Christmas program and following that we meet a group of people at the nursing home just down our street.  We all meet at about 8:30 pm.  The halls in the nursing home are dark.  The night staff have just arrived and it feels like a lonely holy place to be.  We walk every hall, very slowly and sing for the residents.  Every year the staff tells us that a resident has asked if it was angels they heard singing last night.  Last year we walked in and the staff told us that they'd just heard that another staff member was killed in an accident an hour before we got there.  They thanked us again for coming and told us how much it meant to be thought about on a night we you want to be with family and friends, but instead you're stuck at work or in the case of the residents by yourself in a lonely room.  I love, love, love doing this every Christmas Eve.  It fills me up.

We have quite a few other traditions and maybe I'll post them all yet.  These are a few of my favorites.  What are some of your favorite traditions?

Re: Christmas Traditions

My favourite christmas traditons include apple cider that my mom still makes with the cinnamon sticks stuck in the oranges. We always open the stockings before breakfast and our breakfast usually consists of waffles and fruit which is always delicious. After that we potter around with games, cards, until we are ready to open the presents under the tree usually sometime in the afternoon. Then we get ready for a great dinner feast of turkey, cranberry saunce, potatoes, veggies, and other vegetarian meals (2 of my family members are vegetarians. Then we sit around, talk , and play more cards.

Re: Christmas Traditions
Every year my family eats a lot over the holidays!  So one of my favorite traditions that developed is cooking together, at least around each other.  It seems that we spend more and more time cooking / talking in groups in the kitchen, and I love it.  it's a lot like your Christmas baking strategy!  Maybe this year, I will gift my kids out of school as well.   They would LOVE that, but so would I.

Do you by chance bake cookies?  Oatmeal cookies?  We always follow this oatmeal cookie recipe but I am always looking for more.

Christmas Traditions
We have recently started a new Christmas Tradition. During the year we will take some video of friends, outings, family occassions etc at least once a month. Then on Christmas Eve we shall invite all our friends and family involved to come over for a viewing. Off course it will be a condensed version but basically a flashback of the years events. It's nice to know where you've been and what you have accomplished.

Strange feeling of weight lifted this Christmas....
I must say, every Christmas, our families all are drenched in Traditions, from going to Grandma and Grandad's Church together as a (large and extended) family to hot dinners (in the middle of a Queensland summer) and the family spin of secret santa for all adults.

After enduring this (I used to enjoy it, but now it seems more an obligation as family arguments, extended family traditions added in and children who just whinge because they don't want to be dragged from pillar to post in the heat fothe day, when all they want to do is stay home and play with their new gifts and stay in their PJs until lunch, added into the mix) for many years, we have taken the plunge this year. (I probably will still go to church with my grandparents - but will not insist my chldren attend unless they really want to).. we have told all out family, we are staying home, we are not inviting anyone for meals (if they are lucky they might get a vegemite sandwich- yes I told them that!), they are welcome to pop in but are not expected to stay (don't want them to stay), told them if they want to pop in to expect to see us in out PJs at lunch time and the house in a mess.
And I must say.... I am actually looking forward to Christmas again this year!

Oh, I hear ya!! I just had a conversation with my mom about exactly what you're talking about. Christmas family gatherings are often a dreaded thing in our house. And the hustle and bustle of getting from one family to another, to another all in the space of 3 days. It was SO much worse when our kids were younger. It's still more of a stress than a blessing for me. I would also love to stay home in my pjs over the Christmas break. The traditions I love are the ones I/we've made, not the ones that seem to have been made for us and are more of an obligation.

Country Traditions

I too LOVE the Christmas baking!!!  The Monday after Thanksgiving in our neck of the woods is a holiday unto it's self, Deer Day.  This is the first day of Deer gun season and schools shut down.  I also take this day off work so I can decorate and bake!  This has been a tradition since I was a child and my mother (a school teacher so she had no work on this day) would start the baking and do the decorating this day.  THis is also usually the day after the first Sunday in Advent so it is a perfect time to get in the holiday spirit.  THe Advent wreath is another one I have always loved!!!

I did the xmas eve sleepover!

I have done the christmas eve sleepover at my husbands mom's house!! It was fun, we did it for 3 years... But this year, we are staying at home(well sleeping at our place) because of our little one now!

But when shes older, I am defiently going to be doing it again. It's fun and you get to spend it with family!

Good advice, I really do like it!

I should though for sure try the christmas baking, that sounds like ton's of fun! Thanks again!
