Fun for preschoolers :)

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 14th)

Are you running out of things to do with ur preschoolers during the day?

Below are 5 of my favourite things i love to do with my kids when i get a chance.

I hope some other parents can get as much enjoyment out of this as my

family and i do.

1. If your child/ren are old enough to understand the concept of hide & seek, this is a wonderful game for them to play. I only taught my kids the rules of it for the first time tonight and they thoroughly loved it. My 4yo stayed outside their bedroom and counted to 10 (great way to improve counting skills) and the 2 younger kids went in the bedroom and hid. I loved watching them find a place to hide and try to be quiet so as not to get caught!

2. Simple board games are great, (eg snakes & ladders) as are a pack of cards. Try shuffling the deck and pulling out random cards (let your kids pull the cards out they will have more fun) and let them identify the number or letter if they are old enough. as they get older you can also teach them the suit.

3. if you have a tent, pitch it in your backyard and eat dinner or have a picnic lunch inside it. families often subconsciously avoid contact by sitting in front of a tv dinner, and this happens all too often. the fantastic thing about eating in a tent is that you are all confined to a small space, and are forced to talk to one another without the tv distracting you. if you dont own a tent, how about some silly fun instead? pull the chairs out from the dining table and turn them around so that they are back to front, and about a foot away from the table. now get your biggest table cloth or blanket and make a cubby house. then everyone sits under the table and has their dinner under there. guaranteed to get lots of laughs from the little ones at their silly parents sitting under the table instead of at the table lol

4. When was the last time you sat down and coloured in with ur little darlings? next time you do, how about instead of colouring inside the lines, pretend you are having a muscle spasm, and accidentally scribble on the bit your child is colouring. make a big joke of it and act as if you cant help it. your child will think youre so funny.

5. and ive saved the best for last. go grab your camera, and let the kids go crazy thru your wardrobe and drawers. (and old makeup that you no longer use if you have a daughter) let them dress themselves (feather boas or fluffy scarves are great if you have one) and if you have a dress up box, even better. let them pick a place inside the house or out in the backyard for them to strike a pose and pull a funny face. and dont forget, this activity isnt finished until you dress up as well. remember! be as outrageous as you possibly can!

i want pics of this for all the parents that do it lol

and id love to see what other parents love to do with their kids. please feel free to add your two bobs worth as well. childhood is a time for learning and being silly with mum and dad. the sillier we are with them, the more they feel like you love them. id really like to hear from other parents that try some of these tips, please let me know how it turns out! have fun people! enjoy your kids childhood while it lasts!

hide and seek for preschoolers
When we were learning to play hide and seek here, we used to have everyone hide, then the person doing the seeking (usually me) would sing "There is someone hiding..SHHH...who is it...SHHH... do you know who...SHH....There is some one hiding......shhh...PEEKABOO!" but I would look behind a door I knew was not a hiding space, or open a cupboard door, or even lift up a mat when calling peekaboo.... always reminding them "SHHHH".. then I would sing it again, and do the same thing, and I would find them on the 3rd or 4th go, depending on how obvious they were making their hiding spot. If they were rowdy, or calling out... I would find them and say... "that was too easy, you need to be more quiet next time. Let's try again." But if they are just giggling, I pretend I can't hear them... and look in a few more places before finding them... pretending after the 3rd go that I am really stumped, scratching my head saying "HMMM where can they be???!"
