new maternity wear vs 2nd hand maternity wear

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 14th)
So the debate continues. New maternity clothing vs used maternity clothing. Is there really a difference? I mean, apart from the tag and the price difference, they both do the same job. I know for alot of young mums out there, (ok not only just the young ones, alot of mums
who already own a house and are married are experiencing the same difficulty) really struggle to buy maternity clothing from the fancy shops. i remember when i was pregnant, i used to get really frustrated at how daggy some of the clothes are at kmart and big w etc. i remember one day in particular that i was just having a really bad emotional day to begin with, and i thought some budget retail therapy would to the trick to get me in a better mood. boy was i wrong! not only was i having a fat day (we all get them, arent they great- not!) but i was nearing the end of the week so there wasnt much money left, and i couldnt afford to get anything fancy. so off we went to kmart. and boy didnt i get depressed. the only thing there that i liked was $5 more than i had, the rest looked like something a 40 year old would be wearing. i ended up leaving the shop empty handed and even more depressed than i had started, and when i got home i thought to myself, there has got to be a better way! and guess what girls, there is! if youre not a member on ebay already i urge you to sign up. they sell bulk lots of maternity clothes on there for extremely cheap, or if ebay isnt your thing, try the community notice board, local paper, or trading post. theres always people out there wanting to get rid of maternity clothes. if you still cant find anything cheap, try advertising. put a notice on the local noticeboard saying that you are after some 2nd hand clothes, or in the newspaper, and im sure you will get results. also try garage sales. you might even pick up a bargain on some clothes for your newborn. i hope this helps.

2nd hand stores too.
St Vinnies, Salvos, Red Cross, Good Will, etc. That's where I got all my maternity stuff.

Maternity - new and cheap

Great article - I got the vast majority of my maternity wear from eBay, all new with tags that other mums just hadnt gotten around to wearing. I did buy my maternity jeans at Big W and they washed really well, looked quite trendy, and had a VERY comfortable waist band... at $29 I didn't think they were too bad.

Now I've set up my own website selling maternity wear by Blush, Ripe and Ripe Limited and also baby and kids wear at really cheap prices... we get the stuff from the manufacturers in bulk at the end of each season, so the stuff we have on now is actually last summers stock - I certainly don't care, and I know my baby looks great in the gear he wears - last seasons or not! If you'ld like to check it out the address is http://www.bumpbabyandbeyond.com.au .

great article hun, i got mine from the discount rack at target for $10 bucks and sometimes even cheaper but they weren't maternity they were just normal clothes like baby doll dresses and extra large tops as they had nothing in maternity wear as usual, so i'll take your advise for future reference

Maternity wear
Forgot to say I couldnt agree more on the clothes that Kmart and the like stock...I mean just because we are pregnant women it seems that all taste and class go out the window according to whoever buys in these clothes. What happened to attractive clothes for a beautiful pregnant belly...Sheesh! I well remember going shopping coz I needed a top to go to my company Christmas function...I ended up not going coz I couldnt find anything that A) was attractive or B) I could afford.

Will definitely give this a go...starting to get a pot belly now so will need to start looking around soon. All my maternity clothes from last time around were for summer so will need to look for winter stuff.

Anything on Sale

When i was pregnant, like a lot of new mum-to-be's i was on a pretty tight budget. I was a little fussy with second hand clothes (i have a thing about possible germs from strangers), But i was lucky enought to get my maternity clothes on sale - I bought a pair of good pance and a pair of Jeans with a really pretty embrodery design on them both for a total of $20.00. I found that if I wanted something good but not to expensivce, i just bought clothes a few sizes bigger.

Maternity clothes
I bought one outfit that was maternity, a good one for going out, the rest of my clothes I bought stretchy material clothes, I hated any of the maternity clothes and basically refused to wear them!! So it was Lycra all the way for me

I didn't even know there was a debate. :-)
I so wished for second hand maternity clothes and baby items.  My cousins have tons of kids, but I guess I was too late to get anything from them.  I hated the idea of spending a fortune on clothes I was only going to wear a few months.  My DH would have to tell me to just go for it. :-)

clothes

I dont like second hand clothes I dont know why but I dont, I dont mind them if they are from friends and family but not from strangers. and for all that do great . I went to get some maternity clothes and I think I had a heart atact when I saw how expencive they are. but not all of them. after I gave birth I faund this shop and thay had lovely clothes that were even cheaper than "normal" clothes. but what I did was I got few pants with elastic (I think 4 at around $16 each) and just few larger size tops and few elastic skirts and a lot of imagination. I gave them to my friend when she was having a baby, and I still have them as they are just normal clothes that never go out of fasion (like 3/4 sleeve black top).

also try freecycle on the internet you can get things for free
