Whole cows milk...

Tritch by Tritch Talking(November 2006) (rank 157th)

I have a question.. LOL.. Um... Starting at 9 months you can start your baby on homo/whole cows milk, here in Alberta.. Now I am wondering, how do I start to introduce it? Do I mix it in with the formula, or put it in another bottle all together? How

much, 1oz, 2oz, etc.... at first??

Any advice would be great to help me out... She's almost 9 months old, so I am buying it this weekend and getting her started, so I would like much as possible Thanks

You can mix a third of milk with 2/3 formula. Watch tho to make sure she doesn't get sick. After a few weeks (if she doesn't get sick), you can try half and half for a few more weeks, then finally 2/3 milk and 1/3 formula for a few weeks, then last go to straight milk. The health nurses who used to come to see me after Cassia was born were really helpful, they told me to try that, and it worked for me.

Replacing Formula for Cow's Milk
Hi, My son has his 1st birthday  next week and as I have always been told, after 12mths you can give your baby anything, I have done away with his formula, as he has been on it since he was a newborn. So far there hasn't  been any problems with giving him 200ml bottles of full cream milk mixed with only 60mls of boiled water with his 3 meals a day. I  am still worried about allergies etc although he has had all of his immunisations with his 12mth shot due next month. I do have to say, it is great not having to make up bottles anymore however any advice and comments would be helpful. Regards, Dee (first time mum!).

check with your child health nurse or doctor
Please check up on this. I thought I read that cows milk is not suitable until a child is at least 12 months old.

Yep you are absolutely right, cow's milk should NOT be introduced before 12 months at least. My mother in lw still boils her milk then refrigerates it. Boiling the milk changed or breaksdown the protein making it easier to digest.

Yep please check
I wasn't allowed to put my babies on any form of cows milk and even had to give them soya based formula as I am an asthmatic and apparently cows milk at the time was proven to aggravate asthma in the children of asthmatic parents.
So please check this before giving your baby cows milk

The health nurses that used to come and see me told me that you can start as early as 9 months...it's up to you...and your pocket book! They would actually like people to keep their babies on formula til they are 2 years old, but some people can't afford to. I kept my daughter on formuls til she was 2, then i had to ween her off just like i told you.
