Routines

Practical-Princess by Practical-Princess Talking Back(November 2006) (rank 111th)
A friend of mine often complains about the trouble she has getting her child to do homework. I asked her if she had a routine set for her child to which she said, "no." I have 3 kids on my own so routines are important. When the kids get home
from school there's no chaos in asking each child if they have done their homework or anything else they need to do. Once my kids walk in the door after school they get changed out of their uniforms, have a snack, and do their homework. They have been doing this from the time they first started school. I never have to nag them to do their homework. They know that once they have done all they need to do they have the rest of the afternoon to do what they like.

Routines take the fuss out of anything kids do. Bedtime is never a problem in my home, either - when I tell them it's bedtime they go to the toilet, brush their teeth, say goodnight, and off they go. Mornings are fine, too - they eat their breakfast, get dressed, clean their teeth - they don't have the TV on until they are completely ready for school. I find that leaving the TV on is too much of a distraction, especially for my son who will sit gazing at the TV, one shoe on, one off, or half dressed etc, so the TV stays off.

Anyway, the basic message is make a routine and stick to it. It really does make things easier!

Re: Routines

yes a basic afternoon routine does work well for us too but we do something different every now and then to let them know that a break in routine is not going to hurt them

Routines

Thumbs up to you, we have a set routine at our place aswell, so that no one ever forgets I have mapped it out on a large piece of coloured cardboard which is stuck in our kitchen where everyone can see it and never forget what the schedule is. With 9 kidz, it is a must. All children need routine in their lives so that they don't have too many decisions to make at too early an age. For my older children the board also includes their chores, I believe that everyone in a family needs to contribute, it makes them feel wanted and needed and they know they have their niche in the family circle.

Routines...

I never knew how great routines were until I had Francis... WOW i was so unorganised.. But with that being said, I find that if our routine is interupted it kind of messes me up. Francis is fine maybe a little grumpy but I get grumpier.. Yep routines are nice to have...

But in saying that sometimes routines can get a little tiresome and need to be changed once in awhile...

Teaching kids to have initiative
See my blog re:tick charts
I think getting kids to get them selves organised (and enough sense not to turn TV on until they are organised) is a great way to ready them for later life. And a great excuse to praise them too!

Working on the routine
The hardest things about routines is that MOM has to keep them too!  That's my trouble.  Thanks for the reminder that the routine makes life easier.  It's the encouragement I need to keep trying.
