Catalogues and christmas gimmes!!

mommyofWHA by mommyofWHA Speaking(November 2006) (rank 293rd)
You have all seen it with older kids .. their little eyes light up when the christmas flyers and catalogues start coming in the mail, which I swear was even earlier this year then last! I love christmas, one of my favorite times of the year, the decorations, the
carols, the family get togethers, but I have grown to hate the gimmes!! My son was 5 last year and had a terrible case of the gimmes .. gimme this , gimme that, especially as he was endlessly thumbing through the catalogues with pages splashed with toys toys toys!!! So last year I came up with an idea that worked so well I think I will even try it with my 2 year old.. Here it is ..

I gave him the biggest catalogue I could find, sat him down at the table with one piece of construction paper, a pair of safety scissors, and some glue. Then I told him he could cut and glue any toy out of the catalogue onto the piece of paper but he was to be careful that they where toys that he really wanted .. and then to tell me when he was finished. Well my little man took almost 2 hours ( a huge feat when u are 5! ) and then came to me with his paper, each picture carefully cut out and glued onto the paper.

Then we sat down and discussed his choices and which ones he wanted to ask Santa for and which ones he put on there because he might like them. So when it came time to mailing off a letter to santa he also included his piece of paper so that santa wouldnt be confused haha.

I am not saying that this will work for everyone, but I thought it was a cute idea and my son loved doing it so much that as soon as the catalogues started coming this season he saved all of them so that he can decide what pictures he wants to cut out for his "wish" list this year.

I use the catalogue method with a black texta. We then put the page on the fridge so my little ones can decide which one to ask santa for. Yes my eldest is only 4, but it worked last year! I think this year, I'll give him the paper and glue like you suggest, and see how he goes!!

We did something similar with Zac last year, he was 2 1/2 and every catalogue he saw he would say i want this for Christmas i want that for Christmas. My mum sat down with him explaining that Santa couldn't make all those toys just for him and that he should cut down his list so that Santa could make some toys for other little girls and boys.
