Teething Teething Teething!!

LukesMommy by LukesMommy Speaking(November 2006) (rank 500+)

My son is 8 Months old, and has 6 teeth already. He has 3 on top and 3 on bottom. It was a struggle finding ways through it, but with patience and some trial and error, Teething is MORE than manageable.

A few signs that you son or daughter

is teething are: fussiness, exsessive drooling, trouble sleeping, wanting to be held and constant gnawing on ANYTHING they can get their litle gums around!! Also, I noticed with Lucas that his gums raised, like they were swollen and he refused to let me open his mouth to see or feel his gums. He was extremely irritable, not so fun for Mom, but once is invested in teething tools, Teething became more of  a breeze and less of a battle.

The first teething tool I Invested in was the ever popular Frozen teething ring. and I figured that he was TOTALLY going to go for it, But of coarse I was wrong, and Lucas wanted NOTHING to do with holding this cold ring. So I went back to the store to look at my other options. I found SO many teething toys! So, of coarse I started to load up my shopping basket with everthing in sight. I figured that I would buy everything and go home and do some trial and error testing.  So here is what I found.

FIRST - Invest in some Infant Tylenol ot Infant Motrin that is NUMBER ONE is teething relief, BUT if you dont want to give your baby meds...

Next try - Baby Orajel teething SWABS. There are 2 ways to give orajel to your baby, the tube, where you put some on your finger and rub it on babys gums... HOWEVER the catch to that is the flavor, its is very pungent and my son HATED it, So i tried the swabs and they worked like a CHARM!! No strange flavor and you dont have to put you finger in babys mouth. You just snap the tip off of one side of the q-tip and the gel drains into the other side of the swab, no muss or fuss.

And if you are completely against any kind of over the counter help...

The frozen teething ring: Lucas was hesitant to hold onto it because of the temperature.

Teething beads: These are not for fridge or freezer use, they are just a circle of colorful beads that fit easily in babys hand and mouth, Lucas TOTALLY loves this toy, he still plays with it while he's not teething.

Teething Blanket: This was very interesting to me, and i thought it was a clever spin to teething toys, it is a fabric square with a fun picture in the center and teething corners for the baby to chew on. they corners are teething friendly plastic that feels great on babys gums. Lucas LOVES this toy as well. he can firmly grasp it and gnaw on the entire blanket with not fear of choking. ALSO, I should add for babies who have trouble parting with their pacifier, there is a tab on this blanket that holds a pacifier for baby. DOUBLE the teething aide.

Frozen or cold wash rag: The ULTIMATE teething accessory! If all else fails, wet one of your babies wash cloths ans stick it in either the freezer (if your baby doesnt mind the cold temperature) or just use cold water, and let your baby go to town. Lucas just loves his wash cloths, he like to gnaw them when he isn't teething as well. Most babies will go for this among EVERY other toy you give them. It goes along with the whole "I give them a new toy, and all they want is the box it came in" kind of thing.

Hopefully these tips guide you through the test of teething.

GOOD LUCK!!

All of the teething toys I mentioned are under 5 dollars, and you can get them anywhere. I have even seen them in the grocery store. So to all the parents struggling for a way to please their unhappy, teething child... try these tips out, the worse that could happen is that you lose a little time out of your day.

Re: Teething Teething Teething!!

Excellant advice. I'm still not sure if my cranky lil bubba is teething, but he seems to have all the symptoms! I love the wash cloth idea. My bub already likes to chew on them in the bath. I had never thought to give him one outside of the bath.

Re: Teething Teething Teething!!

Great advice! Teething effects every child to some degree and for some kids, and parents, is a very trying time!

My poor Caitlin got 4 top teeth at once which wasnt too fun for anyone concerned. One old wived tale  that I tried was a frozen spoon. Works the same as the frozen washer, but doesnt end up wet. She loved it, and surprisingly it doesnt stick to her lips or tongue.

I have also been told to try pickles. Will try that next time!

linking rings...

great advice...

i also found that the cheapest option is sometimes the best, which doesn't help when you've already bought everything you can find!!!!

but anyway, MOTHERCARE linking rings are brilliant, they cost about £2 and are held easily by baby, they also attach so they're not lost and can be washed/sterilised...

you can also attach other toys to them, another teething ring or toy, this means that it's not boring and can be simple or different every day...

i would recomend these to anyone, they are cheap, brightly coloured, washable they tick all the boxes as far as i can see....

teething
Lily's decided to get 4 teeth all at once... she's already got the bottom 2 front and shes getting 2 top and 2 more bottom ones! What hell! I found this homeopathic medicine called Camilia, its made by Boiron and it works amazingly. It packaged in these little globlues and you just break open the top and either feed it to baby or put it in with their bottle. It's tasteless and really easy for the babe to take!

Teeth

My mom used a fingertip in brandy, I know alcahol is bad!  But it really worked on my sister, she seemed to get all of her teeth at once.  Dont use a dropper either, mom just dipped the tip of her finger in the brandy and spread it on my sisters gums.  I love the teething tablets, I used them on all of my kids!

Teething..

The cloth always worked wonders for me.

I have a leather necklace that my son Braden loves to chew on. It soothes him so much. I would be lost without it at time. He has 6 teeth and 2 more coming in. 4 on top 4 on the bottom. Also he likes when I just rubbed his gums for him.

2 more options

In addition to the above, 2 other things that work great for us are Hyland's Teething Tablets and frozen banana or apple in a mesh feeder.  My middle dd also liked frozen bagles when she was big enough for finger foods.  *Warning*  If you

oops - accidentally hit enter.  Meant to say - always stay with your child if you use the frozen bagle.  You don't want them to get a big chunk off and choke.

I was thankful that my daughter did not mind holding her frozen keys.. We also have a teething blanket and book, she don't use them though. She would rather have the frozen keys lol..

Teething Ring
I used a couple of teething rings.  One was in the freezer while the other was out in case it got dirty or warmed up and we needed a cold one NOW already!  Worked wonders for us.

grub hated teethoing rings/toys too. the only thing that works for him is Brauer's Teething Relief, GUmmy Dummy's (living in the freezer as we speak), and nurofen for his temp...always gets high temps with teeth this one.
