In house accidents

tracetines by tracetines Walking(November 2006) (rank 500+)

I have a 14mth old who recently caught her finger in the vcr ( video recorder), that we have set up in her bedroom. She is fine just has very sore finger.  We have now put it higher up to avoid it happening again.

Anyway i would like to

address some basic safety rules: Especially related to young children.

Make sure all medicine, bathroom, laundry and household products are kept out of reach. eg. high shelf or lockable cabinet.

Always keep electrical cords and equipment out of harms way.

Neave leave baby unattended where they could fall. eg. bed or changetable.

Always make sure nothing is lying around as potential choking hazard.

These are just a few safety issues, i'm sure there is many more and often you can get more information from your doctor or child health nurse or other sites off the internet. These types of accidents are always avoidable just need some basic commonsense.

Doors
We always have trouble with the hinges on doors.
Children seem to like to put their fingers in the gap and then try to close the door with their other hand.
Fingers in exercise bike wheels and chains (yes its an old one) is another popular pain  they seek.

Doors
Although putting catches on doors is good and moving things out of reach etc experience is also a great teacher - it is just being within cooee at all times - preferably closer to our little loved ones in case they do get fingers trapped in the door, startled on the warm tap, or caught in the cookie jar. So that we can make it right before it gets too bad - and preferably before they drink all the lotion in the pretty pink bottle!
Peace

Plastic bags too !
Plastic grocery bags, garbage bags, plastic packaging (like on paper towels and toilet paper) , etc ... are dangerous and can cause suffocation ....

Also, outlet covers for the electrical outlet so that babies do not get their little fingers in there.. OUCH if anything happened.
